The Bundoora Employability Expo on Wednesday 12 August is designed to answer those questions – and put you face-to-face with the people who could shape your future career.

More than 50 employers will be at the Melbourne (Bundoora) campus to meet La Trobe students, share opportunities and offer insights into their organisations. Whether you’re looking for a placement, graduate program, casual work or simply exploring what’s out there, the Expo is one of the easiest ways to start building professional connections while you’re still studying.

For all students at all stages

The biggest misconception about careers expos is that they’re only for final-year students looking for a job.

In reality, they’re valuable no matter where you are in your degree.

For first-year students, it’s an opportunity to explore different industries and learn what employers value. Mid-degree students can start building networks, ask about placements and gain insights that will help shape future decisions. Final-year students can have meaningful conversations about graduate opportunities and recruitment timelines.

The earlier you start engaging with employers, the more confident you’ll feel when it’s time to apply.

Meet the people behind the job ads

Online job descriptions only tell part of the story.

At the Expo, you’ll have the chance to speak directly with recruiters, hiring managers and industry representatives about what it’s really like to work in their organisation.

Ask about graduate programs. Learn what makes an application stand out. Find out which skills they’re looking for now – and which ones will matter in the future.

These conversations can give you insights that simply aren’t available online.

Hear what employers really want

One of the highlights of this year’s Expo is an employer panel focused on the graduate recruitment process.

Recruitment can seem confusing from the outside, with online applications, assessment centres, interviews and psychometric testing often feeling like unfamiliar territory.

The panel will unpack how employers recruit graduates, explain what they’re looking for at each stage, and share practical advice to help students approach the process with greater confidence.

Your LinkedIn profile is often one of the first places employers will look.

At this year’s Expo, students can receive a free professional LinkedIn headshot, giving their profile an instant upgrade.

Your safety matters at La Trobe

In 2024, Uni Safe was used more than 45,000 times by those studying or working at La Trobe. Approximately 95% of requests came from students at the Melbourne Campus, particularly those who live on campus.

About the new UniSafe app

The new UniSafe app is available for use at the Melbourne Campus. It includes some exciting features to make the service easier to use:

• Book a UniSafe trip up to one hour in advance
• See how far away your UniSafe vehicle is
• Choose from designated and clearly marked pick‑up and drop‑off points across campus, as well as nearby transport hubs including Reservoir Station (Mernda Line) and Macleod Station (Hurstbridge Line).
• Rate your trip and help improve the service

Already more than 4,800 escorts have been completed since the UniSafe app launched at the start of Semester 1. For those who regularly use Reservoir Station for pick-up or drop-off, please note the designated point has moved to the car park on the eastern (High Street) side of the station.

If you prefer, you can still request for the UniSafe service by calling (03) 9479 2222. This number also continues to support UniSafe services at Albury-Wodonga and Bendigo Campuses.

• Learn to face life challenges, including those caused by discrimination.

The Australian Government will conduct a nationwide test of AusAlert, Australia’s new national emergency warning system at 2pm on Monday, 27 July 2026.  

AusAlert will be a fast and reliable way to help people be informed and better prepared during local and national emergencies, such as bushfires, severe weather and public health emergencies.  Before AusAlert becomes operational in October 2026, it will be tested across Australia to ensure it works as intended. 

What to expect during the test 

As part of the nationwide test, this alert will sound on all compatible mobile devices including those that are set to ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’. Compatible devices may be mobile phones, smartwatches, and tablets.  

Devices may: 

• vibrate 
• display a text message  
• play a loud, siren-like sound for approximately 10 seconds  

The message will clearly state that it is a test and that no action is required.  

Important information for people with additional or safety devices  

AusAlerts are designed to get people’s attention quickly during emergencies, to help keep them safe. Bur for people who use safety devices, receiving an AusAlert may cause concern as it would make those devises easier to find, especially if they are meant to stay hidden. 

If receiving AusAlerts may place you, or someone you know, at risk, the following steps could be taken at least 1 hour before the test:  

• Turn the device off or switch it to aeroplane mode 
• Leave the device turned off or in aeroplane mode for 24 hours  
• Turn the device off if it does not have an aeroplane mode option  
• Consider all devices that may need to remain undiscovered and disconnecting during this alert including phones, smartwatches, tablets 

A device in aeroplane mode can still be used through WiFi where it is safe to do so.  

Important: you will still receive the AusAlert national test if your device is on ‘silent’ or ‘do not disturb’ 

For people in Victoria, this means taking these steps by 1:00pm (AEST) on Monday 27 July.  

Where it is safe to do so, you are encouraged to share this information discreetly with anyone who may need it.

The Science of Running Unpacked will also act as the official launch for Run La Trobe 2026, which will take place at La Trobe’s Melbourne (Bundoora) Campus on Friday 25 September.

Bringing together experts

The panel will feature leading La Trobe research experts from the La Trobe School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, who specialise in nutrition, physiotherapy, podiatry, psychology, and strength and conditioning.

Panel members will include:

• Brody McCarthy (La Trobe University PhD Candidate in Running Biomechanics & Sessional Tutor)
• Professor Regina Belski (Professor, Associate Dean Partnerships in the School of Allied Health, Human Services and Sport, and former Discipline Lead Food, Nutrition and Dietetics)
• Dr Tom West (Sport and Exercise Physiotherapist, Lecturer in Physiotherapy)
• Dr Daniel Bonanno (Associate Professor in Podiatry)

Key focus areas of the discussion

The symposium discussion will include:

• Injury prevention and load management
• Fuelling for performance and recovery
• Footwear and biomechanics
• Mental approach to training and racing
• Strength work that translates to running

In addition to the expert panel discussion, participants will receive complimentary light refreshments and snacks, as well as a guided tour through the La Trobe Sport Performance Hub lab spaces to explore how La Trobe’s range of testing programs can support their training.

Taking place at the La Trobe Sport Performance Hub (within the La Trobe Sports Park Stadium) on Tuesday 28 July from 6:00pm – 7:30pm, The Science of Running Unpacked will feature a moderated, evidence-based panel discussion aimed at providing practical takeaways for runners of all levels.

We’re improving wayfinding across campus by introducing names and colour-coding for key walkways and service lanes, and we want you to help shape them by having your say in our survey.

Why your input matters

As someone who uses campus every day, you know which routes are busiest, most confusing, or most memorable. Your ideas can help make it easier for everyone, from first-years finding their classes to friends meeting up between lectures.

This project will

• Make getting around campus simpler and more intuitive
• Create names that reflect student life and key destinations
• Improve signage across the central academic area

What you’ll be asked

The survey is quick and easy, with just four questions covering:

• Major walkways like the paths through the Agora and past the Library
• Routes between buildings, with themed naming options you can choose from
• Service lanes, where you can vote on themes or suggest your own names

There’s also space to get creative and submit your own ideas. If you’ve got a great name in mind, we want to hear it!

The survey will take about 5 minutes to complete. It’s completely optional and open to all students. This is your chance to shape the future of campus navigation and maybe even see your idea on a sign!

The La Trobe Entrepreneurship Drop-In Series is a new, flexible way for students to explore entrepreneurship, build practical skills and connect with others, all in just one hour. 

Held at the Eagleworks Innovation Centre, these sessions are designed to be low-pressure and accessible. There’s no registration, no prerequisites and no need to commit to a full program.  

Just drop in, learn something new and take a step towards turning your ideas into action. 

What to expect 

Each session focuses on a different stage of the entrepreneurial journey, from generating ideas to pitching, prototyping and understanding how to bring a concept to life. 

You’ll take part in interactive activities, learn practical skills and hear real insights that can help you shape your thinking and build confidence. 

Whether you’ve got a side project, a business idea, or you’re just curious about startups, there’s something here for you. 

You don’t need to have a fully formed idea or any experience at all. Sometimes, all it takes is one hour to spark something bigger.
