Breakups can be one of the most significant mental health events young men experience. New Australian research with men aged 18–30 shows the emotional impact can be intense, disorienting and can place young men at real risk.

The pressure to “move on”

Many men feel pressure to quickly get over a breakup. This research suggests that well‑intended advice can sometimes make things harder, not easier.

What recovery really looks like

Healing after a breakup takes time. Real recovery involves space to process what happened and gradually rebuild. This includes:

Refocussing on daily routines and study habits

Reconnecting with interests, sports or social activities

Slowly regaining emotional stability and allowing your motivation to gradually return

Why the right support matters

Support makes a difference, but only when it’s the right kind. The right support can help young men to better understand themselves at their lowest point. Some examples of helpful support include:

Taking someone seriously.

Hearing them out without judgment

Avoid giving pressure, quick fixes, or “just get over it” advice.

You don’t need to rush your way out of a breakup. Real recovery takes time, so give yourself the space to go through it properly.

Some useful resources

Studying at one of La Trobe’s regional campuses now means access to student wellbeing support right where you are. Support is available on campus and in person, alongside online and external options when required.

Speak with a wellbeing professional

Each regional campus has a dedicated Student Wellbeing staff member available to meet with you face to face. They offer confidential counselling and supportive conversations to help you talk through what you’re experiencing and consider your next steps.

Connected support options

If you’re unsure where to begin, your campus wellbeing staff member can be a first point of contact. Your local wellbeing staff member can help connect you to the broader range of La Trobe Student Wellbeing and mental health services, including remote support and referrals to external services where appropriate.

Take the first step

To book an appointment, complete an enquiry form.

You can find out about the full range of wellbeing services here.

If you need to speak with someone urgently outside of hours, you can get in touch with the La Trobe Out of Hours Crisis Line on 1300 146 307 or text 0488 884 100 — available 24/7 on weekends and public holidays, and 5 pm–9 am on weekdays.

La Trobe University’s Sport Park has once again been announced as the Melbourne host site for the 3rd consecutive year!

A global charity fundraising event…with loads of fun!

The Wings for Life World Run is a unique run event where 100% of the money raised goes towards spinal cord injury research. It is a truly special event for both runners and wheelchair participants, with 528 global events being held across the world simultaneously.

Go Team La Trobe!

In 2026, we are aiming to have our largest Team La Trobe contingent yet turn out and take part in the event on our home campus. We can’t wait to see a sea of red and black colours representing the university with pride!

Where is it happening?

The 2026 edition of the event will this year take place on Sunday 10 May commencing at 9:00pm (AEST). The event hub will be located at the La Trobe Sports Stadium. Please note that Sports Drive from Car Park 2A to the Home of the Matildas (HoTM) will be closed. The HoTM will still be accessible on foot.

If you have any questions about the road closure or accessing the campus during the Wings for Life World Run, please contact David Chadzynski on D.Chadzynski@latrobe.edu.au.

Looking after your wellbeing is an important part of university life, and sometimes the hardest part is knowing where to start. To make it easier to connect with support, Wellbeing Services are bringing the support directly to you through new Wellbeing Outposts at the Bundoora campus.

These outposts are relaxed drop-in spaces where you can chat with a member of the Wellbeing Team. Staffed by qualified social workers with experience in supporting university students, these outposts provide a space to ask questions or get help finding the right types of support if you need it.

Indigenous Student Services, Ngarn-gi Bagora Centre – Wellbeing Outpost:

Wellbeing staff are now available at the Ngarn-gi Bagora Indigenous Centre for First Nations students fortnightly on a Thursday between 10am and 2pm.

This outpost creates a welcoming space to connect informally with a Wellbeing professional, learn about available supports, and get help navigating services both at La Trobe and in the wider community. Here you can receive wellbeing information, talk through concerns, or be supported to connect with the broader Wellbeing Services team if needed.

This initiative strengthens collaboration between Indigenous Student Services and Wellbeing Services, helping ensure culturally supportive and accessible wellbeing support for First Nations students.

Living at La Trobe, Bundoora – Wellbeing Outpost:

If you live in on-campus accommodation at Bundoora, wellbeing support is now even closer.

A member of the Wellbeing Team will be available at the Living at La Trobe offices on a fortnightly basis Tuesdays between 10am and 2pm. You’re welcome to drop by for a quick chat, ask questions, or get guidance about support services available to you as a student.

Why visit a Wellbeing Outpost?

Wellbeing Outposts are designed to make support easy, approachable and accessible.

You might visit to:

Talk through a challenge you’ve been experiencing.

Talk through concerns about another person.

Ask questions about mental health or wellbeing supports.

Get help connecting with the right service.

You don’t need to be in crisis to reach out. Sometimes a short conversation, the right information, or being pointed in the right direction can make a real difference.

If you’d like to access additional support or make a formal appointment, you can also connect with Wellbeing Services online here.

A reminder that all disabled parking spaces on campus are reserved strictly for permit holders and must remain available at all times.

We’ve had reports of these spaces being used during wet weather. Please plan ahead and allow extra time to park in designated areas.

We appreciate your help in keeping campus accessible for everyone.
