Academic Board: Call for nominations

Are you a regional student interested in being involved in the decision-making process of the University? Join us at La Trobe’s Academic Board!

We are making a second call for nominations to Academic Board from both undergraduate and postgraduate students on any regional campus.

What is Academic Board?

Academic Board is the primary body for academic governance and decision-making at La Trobe University. The Board is established under legislation and provides advice to the Vice-Chancellor and University Council on issues that affect academic excellence – with the Board reporting directly to Council.

Membership of the Board includes senior academic leaders of the University, elected staff members and student representatives. The president of the Student Union, association or representative body of each campus (or their nominee) is a member of the board, as well as six elected student members elected annually.

How do I become a member?

First, don’t worry if you haven’t been involved in student politics before. It’s not a prerequisite.

When deciding if you have the right background, ask yourself the following:

  • Have you been on a student advisory group?
  • Are you a Peer Learning Advisor with a finger on the pulse of the student population?
  • Are you an engaged student at a regional campus who wants to make sure the voices of your peers are heard?

These are all relevant perspectives to bring to Academic Board.

What is the role of a student member?

As a member of Academic Board, you will join in on the discussion and debates for policy on matters such as admissions, assessment, teaching, student conduct, research and academic appointments and promotion.

The Term of Office for membership of Academic Board is twelve months and will commence from 1 January 2023. Successful candidates will be inducted and receive information and mentorship support ahead of their first meeting.

How do I nominate?

If you are interested in nominating yourself as a regional undergraduate student member on Academic Board, you will need to complete the online nomination form by 5:00pm, Tuesday 8 November 2022.

If more than one nomination is received for any of the positions, an election will be necessary and will be held online via a third-party vendor. In this circumstance, students will be advised as to the next steps.

Full details of student eligibility to nominate, the nomination process and other relevant information to help guide your decision can be found here.
