The Department of Management and Marketing provides high quality teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as executive education underpinned by cutting edge research and community engagement across important facets of marketing and management including human resource management, strategic and international management, critical management and ethics and governance.
Our educational programs and research activities focus on the role of people, systems and processes to enhance the sustainable and socially responsible operation of both Australian and international organisations to positively impact stakeholders including shareholders, managers, workers and their communities.
Our teaching is underpinned by a strong emphasis on combining the latest marketing and management research and theory, and best practice from around the world with the innovative use of teaching technologies and educational approaches. Our teaching is also underpinned by authentic learning which integrates theory with real world business issues providing students with industry experiences and assessment.
Management and Human Resource Management
Management is a critical activity in organisations across all sectors of the economy, including the private, public and not for profit sectors. As such, there are significant employment opportunities in management and human resource management (HRM), both in Australia and internationally. Management and HRM at La Trobe are focused on providing students with an academically rigorous and practical grounding in core management competencies, while also recognising that managers in contemporary organisations need to be both entrepreneurial and innovative.
Our management and HRM programs at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels have a strong focus on responsible management and leadership. This is highlighted by the fact that La Trobe Business School was one of the first 100 business schools and universities around the world to actively endorse the Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), a UN-backed initiative to promote corporate responsibility and sustainability in business education. Related to this, our programs provide significant opportunities for personal and professional skills development. We also have an important group of subjects that focus on the international dimensions of management and business.
Graduates from the Management and HRM discipline areas go on to work in leading private sector organisations, including large multi-national enterprises, government, not-for-profit and community-based organisations as human resource managers, recruitment managers, management consultants, retail managers, sales executives and business owners, among other areas.
Marketing helps businesses get a competitive edge in today’s fast-paced consumer environment. Students develop a solid foundation in marketing fundamentals, research and strategic data analysis. They gain the skills to develop and execute marketing strategies which address customers needs and wants, the decision-making process, advertising and brand management.
Sport is not only a form of entertainment to be played or watched throughout the world, but is increasingly a vehicle for driving economic development, stimulating trade, tourism and investment, promoting cities and nations, creating and maintaining national pride and helping to improve our health and wellbeing.
The growth and professionalism of sport has resulted in it becoming an established and much sought after field of employment. Managing contemporary sport organisations involves applying core business principles, such as strategic planning, marketing, leadership, governance and performance management, to opportunities and challenges unique to sport – managing sport is not like managing any other business and requires specialised skills and knowledge.
The global sport industry is diverse and as a result graduates of sport management courses are employed in a wide range of roles depending on their interests, such as managing the welfare of elite athletes, developing sport programs that encourage children to be more active, managing the media, marketing sporting equipment, merchandise and apparel, managing sport venues and facilities or working with paid staff and volunteers to deliver major events.

Tourism, Hospitality and Events
The tourism, hospitality and events industries are the world's largest employers. There is a growing demand for tourism, hospitality and event graduates with business management skills and training.
To prepare you for essential negotiation and interaction skills, we place a strong emphasis on critical thinking, communication and human interaction. Whether your sights are set on profit making or community building, working at an international or a local level, you will be ready to meet high standards of professional excellence as soon as you enter the workforce.
We have established partnerships with some of the major players in the tourism, hospitality and event industries. This gives you exposure to potential areas of employment. Our courses are backed by internationally respected researchers and experts in the field of this major Australian and global industry. Our programs offer you specialised tourism, hospitality and events subjects alongside core business subjects such as accounting, marketing and economics.
Tourism and Hospitality students study food and beverage services, tourism computer reservations systems, gastronomy, destination marketing and management, and simulating hotel operations. Event management students study hallmark events, event planning and event operations.
Graduates will be prepared to work in business, government and non-profit sectors. Tourism and hospitality graduates may find work in a range of human service industries. These include tourism, event and conference management, sporting events and festivals, hotels and resorts, restaurants, clubs and bars, logistics, catering and banquet management, convention centres, event and conference management, and wholesale and retail management. Event management graduates may work with event's organisers, festivals, venue operators and events service providers, destination marketing, and venue operators on sports, arts and community events.
