La Trobe has a range of induction programs called the Basics that will enable you to better understand our approach to teaching and learning. These programs will also help you to settle into your new teaching role or refresh your teaching practice if you are an existing staff member.

Sessional Teaching Staff

Introduction to Teaching for Sessional Staff

This program is an orientation to teaching and learning at La Trobe and prepares you for your new role.  It comprises a self-paced, online module that includes:

  • key information to improve the quality of your teaching
  • a moderated online discussion
  • access to networking forums
  • a resource library comprising of vodcasts and videos

Third Party Teaching Staff

This program is designed for third party teachers: teaching staff who are employed by an education provider, in Australia or overseas, that has entered into a partnership with La Trobe University to deliver La Trobe University course to La Trobe University students. The program comprises five modules for teachers with different levels of experience. You can choose the modules that are most appropriate for you in the order that is most relevant.

Ongoing and Contract Teaching Staff

Introduction to Teaching and Learning

This program provides initial induction to all contract and ongoing academics new to teaching at La Trobe University. Developed as a 2-day program in blended mode, it comprises a suite of self-paced online modules that introduces academics to key concepts informing teaching at La Trobe, and a one-day face-to-face workshop which aims to build understandings of the application of these in practice.   As this program comprises an element of the foundation subject in the University’s Graduate Certificate of Higher Education (GCHE), completion entitles participants to seek entry to the subject via Principles of Digital Teaching and Learning, the extended induction to teaching program.
