Frequently asked questions

What items can be requested and how long will it take?

Copies of journal articles and book chapters are usually received in 2 - 4 days, loans are usually received in 1 - 2 weeks. Overseas loans take 2 - 4 weeks. Circumstances such as the item being on loan or missing from a library may delay supply. Enquire about the Rush Service for urgent requests.

Some items are less likely to be available:

  • Technical reports and standards
  • Recently published books (NOTE: the library may purchase a new book if it falls within the library’s collection policies)
  • Audiovisual materials including videos and CDs
  • Whole volumes or issues of periodicals
  • Textbooks Materials for class reserve or group use
  • Rare books
  • Genealogical resources
  • Reference materials
  • Computer software and manuals
  • Electronic books

How long can I borrow an item and can it be renewed?

All loans are made at the discretion of the lending library which may choose not to lend or copy any item. Some libraries will lend material only on the condition that it is used in a library building.

The lending library assigns the loan period to books and microforms. Loan periods range between 2 and 8 weeks, make sure that items you have borrowed are returned by the due date. If you require more time to use an item a renewal must be requested before the item is due for return.

Some materials may be renewed once. Renewals are not guaranteed and are granted at the discretion of the lending library. Items cannot be renewed if they are already overdue. You can request a renewal by sending an email to You will receive a reply when the outcome is known.

Items may be returned to the following LTU campus libraries:

  • Bendigo
  • Bundoora (Melbourne)

Changes to Document Delivery service

La Trobe University Library has implemented a new system for the Inter Library Loans – Document Delivery service, so we can provide a better, more streamlined service, using one interface for all borrowing requests.

How do I use the new Document Delivery system?

The Document Delivery system is now easier to use with one system to manage all your Library and Inter Library loans.

To request a Resource that is not in our collection:

  • Make sure you are logged on to the La Trobe network
  • Go to Library Search and sign in
  • At the top of the page on the menu bar select Document Delivery
  • Complete the form and select Request
A record of your request is automatically added to your borrowing history

I have found a resource but can’t access it. Do I have to type the results in another form to make a request?

When you have searched for a book, chapter, or article, and the words ‘No full-text’ are displayed with the title in the search results, you will need to make a request.

To request a resource that is not in our collection:

  • Select the item’s title and a new page will display
  • In the ‘Get It’ section, select Document Delivery. This will pre-populate a form most of with the publication details
  • For a book chapter, ensure that the ‘Chapter’ field is completed
  • Complete the form and select Request

How can I access my Document Delivery history?

From 29th April Document Delivery history will be available via the Library homepage, by selecting ‘My Account’ with all library borrowing and requests history.
