Steps to study at La Trobe
Find your ideal degree
At La Trobe, we co-design our degrees with industry to teach you the technical skills you need to land your dream job. Our course pages have everything you need to know, including the subjects you’ll study and specific entry requirements. Find the course that’s right for you.
Find the scholarship that’s right for you
Our expansive range of scholarships for international students includes:
- Destination Australia Scholarships
- La Trobe International Scholarships
- La Trobe Regional Campus Scholarships
- our new Early Bird Acceptance Grant
- region-specific scholarships for high-achieving students.
Check if you’re eligible for advanced standing
If you’re switching from another course, or you’ve previously studied in a relevant field, you could get a head start on your La Trobe degree with advanced standing. This recognises your prior study with credit towards your degree, which reduces the number of subjects you need to complete to graduate.
Apply for your course
Bring together your supporting documents and submit your application with the help of our friendly support staff. We’ll automatically assess your eligibility for our scholarships as part of your application, and if you request advanced standing, we’ll assess that as well – no separate process required.
Accept your offer and organise your visa
Once we’ve made you an offer, it’s time to meet any remaining conditions and accept your offer.
To study at La Trobe as an international student, you’ll need a student visa. If you already have one, that’s great – our team can help you with the changes you may need as you start your new degree. If you don’t already have a visa, you can apply for one after you accept your offer. Review important visa information.

More reasons to choose La Trobe
We’re committed to delivering a world-class education while ensuring the wellbeing of our students. Here are some of the ways we’re giving you more flexibility and support to study with us.
Our International Student Services team can help you with pretty much any academic, social, financial or cultural issue you encounter. Our comprehensive personal, study and career support services include:
- our International Student Lounge
- our eFriends program
- our Student Wellbeing Team
- our comprehensive career support program.
If you’re offered a place in a degree commencing Semester 1 or Semester 2 2021, you can accept your offer with a 50% deposit (plus Overseas Student Health Cover), then pay the remaining balance before your course’s census date.
If you commence studying in Semester 1 2021 but have to change your plans, you can still withdraw before census date and apply for a full refund.
We understand that COVID-19 restrictions may mean you need to reconsider your study plans and personal circumstances. Along with our comprehensive range of support services, you may also have the option to reduce your study load to better manage your personal circumstances.
A regular full-time study load for international students is 60 credit points (usually equivalent to 4 subjects) per semester. If you have compelling circumstances, you could apply to reduce your study load after enrolment. Our International Student Services team will be able to guide you through the process.
If you can’t access electronic versions of the supporting documents you need for your application, we accept scanned copies of certified documents. These scans must:
- be clear, easy-to-read and in full colour
- be submitted in PDF or JPEG file formats.
If you submit a translated document, you must also provide a certified copy of the original. If your documentation doesn’t meet admission requirements, we’ll request further documents for verification.
Studying on campus gives you access to our leading face-to-face student experience. You’ll study in world-class learning spaces, such as our cybersecurity labs, simulation trading floor, fully operational health clinics or newly developed Sports Park.
But it’s important to also take time to enjoy yourself – so you’ll be able to join a student-run club, participate on on-campus programs or even get active with one of our sporting teams.
You’ll also have access to a wide range of on-campus and off-campus living options, including newly built accommodation at our Melbourne Campus.
You’ll prepare for your career in courses we’ve co-designed with industry, learn using software and equipment you’ll find in your future workplace and hear guest lectures from industry leaders.
It’s an approach that works – 87.6% of our undergraduates and 94.2% of our postgraduates find work within four months, according to results from QILT’s Graduate Outcomes Survey from 2017 to 2019. (Find this and other stats on the ComparED website.)
