Steps to study at La Trobe

  • Find your ideal degree

At La Trobe, we co-design our degrees with industry to teach you the technical skills you need to land your dream job. Our course pages have everything you need to know, including the subjects you’ll study and specific entry requirements. Find the course that’s right for you.

  • Find the scholarship that’s right for you

Our expansive range of scholarships for international students includes:

Discover more about our scholarships and eligibility requirements.

  • Check if you’re eligible for advanced standing

If you’re switching from another course, or you’ve previously studied in a relevant field, you could get a head start on your La Trobe degree with advanced standing. This recognises your prior study with credit towards your degree, which reduces the number of subjects you need to complete to graduate.

  • Apply for your course

Bring together your supporting documents and submit your application with the help of our friendly support staff. We’ll automatically assess your eligibility for our scholarships as part of your application, and if you request advanced standing, we’ll assess that as well – no separate process required.

Learn how to apply. (Check our course application closing dates to confirm deadlines – but it’s a good idea to start the admission process as soon as possible.)

  • Accept your offer and organise your visa

Once we’ve made you an offer, it’s time to meet any remaining conditions and accept your offer.

To study at La Trobe as an international student, you’ll need a student visa. If you already have one, that’s great – our team can help you with the changes you may need as you start your new degree. If you don’t already have a visa, you can apply for one after you accept your offer. Review important visa information.

If you’re offered a place in a degree commencing Semester 1 or Semester 2 2021, you can accept your offer with a 50% deposit (plus Overseas Student Health Cover), then pay the remaining balance before your course’s census date.

If you commence studying in Semester 1 2021 but have to change your plans, you can still withdraw before census date and apply for a full refund.

We understand that COVID-19 restrictions may mean you need to reconsider your study plans and personal circumstances. Along with our comprehensive range of support services, you may also have the option to reduce your study load to better manage your personal circumstances.

A regular full-time study load for international students is 60 credit points (usually equivalent to 4 subjects) per semester. If you have compelling circumstances, you could apply to reduce your study load after enrolment. Our International Student Services team will be able to guide you through the process.
