Artists Danica Chappell and Damien Shen will join La Trobe Art Institute’s Kent Wilson in conversation about their experiments with antiquated photographic technologies, and the potential of these old techniques to uncover hidden truths. Chappell’s experiments with daguerreotypes and Shen’s innovative manipulation of tintypes challenge and reward the artists as they push the limits of old processes.

This talk is presented in connection with our current exhibition Far From the Eye . This major new series of works by Melbourne artist Danica Chappell was informed by an exchange with chemical biologist Dr Donna Whelan from La Trobe University’s Institute of Molecular Science (LIMS). It is the second in our Collaboratory series exploring collaboration in contemporary art practice.

The exhibition is part of the PHOTO 2021 International Festival of Photography. https://photo.org.au/

Damien Shen’s recent exhibition A stone from another mountain at Benalla Art Gallery also formed  part of PHOTO 2021. Damien is a South Australian man of Ngarrindjeri and Chinese bloodlines. His artistic practice is embedded in histories, revisiting the people, places and stories that shape the world he occupies.
