Type of Event:

This event will take place over two days (October 30 and November 6)

We exist in a time of rapid, successive upheavals. These fundamental changes are political, ecological, technological, and cultural, and they have a significant impact on our social and emotional lives. The present moment is a case in point: ongoing narratives of crisis are communicated in highly emotionalised (social) media landscapes and languages that encourage us to participate in heightened affective states.

The symposium considers the roles of affect and/or emotion in processes of social, cultural or political crisis in the past and present. Topics include: theories and methodologies of emotion or affect in times of sudden change; societal and communal responses to change in the form of emotional regulation and practice; the intersection of emotion and disease; the relationship between emotion, affect and the body; and much else.

This symposium is sponsored by the Affect, Emotion and Society Research Cluster (School of Humanities and Social Sciences, La Trobe University)
