The National Health and Medical Research Council introduced the IDEAS grants scheme as a new initiative a couple of years back. The IDEAS scheme funds innovative and creative research from any area of health and medical research from discovery to implementation. Investigators from any point in their career are encouraged to apply. The IDEAS grants scheme is not intended to support trial or cohort study methodology. It’s probably fair to say, many investigators have struggled to understand what a good IDEAS grant application might look like. The 2021 IDEAS round has just closed so now is probably a good time kick off discussions about developing a strong IDEAS grant for the 2022 scheme. To this end three Chief Investigators that have been successful in this scheme – Professors Leeanne Carey, Midranda Rose and Damminda Alahakoon – will discuss their journey to IDEAS grant success.

Who should attend?

Colleagues from La Trobe University considering submitting to the 2021 IDEAS grant scheme. The event should also be of interest to higher degree research students keen to develop their understanding of Category 1 research funding schemes in Australia.

What’s the format of the session?

The session will be facilitated by Professor Richard Gray, Theme Lead Healthy People, Families and Communities. Each investigator will briefly talk about their experience of developing innovative and creative IDEAS followed by a facilitated discussion and questions from ZOOM CHAT.
