All business leaders must make tough choices. In professional sport in Australia the decision-making stakes are high, with tribal fan bases putting every decision under the microscope. A multitude of stakeholders interests can make an ideal solution seem impossible. Athletes, players, coaches, staff, members, fans, sponsors and the media all have an influence.
Join La Trobe for an intimate discussion on decision making in sport with three of the Australian sports industry’s most respected leaders including CEO's from our partners - Carlton FC and Melbourne Rebels.
Dr Geraldine Kennett - Director of the MBA Program and Associate Professor of Business Management at La Trobe University
Geraldine has held senior executive positions in professional and industry associations in Melbourne, including:
* Chief Executive Officer, Institute for Public Administration Australia’s (IPAA) Victorian Division
* Membership Strategy Manager, Australian Industry Group
* Professional Development and Membership Manager. Australian Human Resource Institute
Her qualifications include a Doctorate of Business Administration and a Masters in Training and Development. She is also an Editor for the Australian Journal of Public Administration and a Reviewer for the American Journal, Review of Personnel Public Administration.
Cain Liddle - Chief Executive Officer, Carlton Football Club
Cain Liddle joined Carlton F.C in November 2017, previously the Chief Customer Officer at Richmond F.C, where he worked his way from General Manager of Consumer Business.
During his tenure at Carlton, Cain has overseen the re-structuring of the club’s men’s and women’s football programs and has led the business to consecutive club membership records, along with significant increases in both commercial revenues and the Carlton IN Business corporate networking program
In 2019, Cain led the launch of Carlton’s five-year strategic plan that highlights the Club’s vision, values, strategic priorities and key targets for the period 2019 – 2023.
Baden Stephenson - Chief Executive Officer, Melbourne Rebels
Baden has extensive experience in rugby union as a representative player, coach and administrator over a 25 year period.
Baden developed his skills across a range of roles in Canberra, Japan and Sydney prior to moving to Melbourne in 2014 when he was appointed the General Manager Rugby. In June 2017 Baden was appointed CEO at a very difficult time for the Club when Rugby Australia took over 3 months to decide which Australian team would be cut from the Super Rugby Competition.
In 2018 Baden set about rebuilding the Club from the bottom up by appointing a new Head Coach, Captain, playing list and General Managers to lead both the Rugby & Commercial departments. During the last two years the Club has made significant progress on and off the field by reconnecting with the Community, building a world class rugby program, and securing long term commercial partnerships and working hard to establish an authentic identity.
