'Smart Cities' - a term being used more and more, but what does it actually mean? The Asian Smart Cities Research Innovation Network (ASCRIN) has been set up to support the research, development and implementation of Smart Cities. The objective of a 'Smart City' is to promote cities that provide core infrastructure, a clean and sustainable environment, and give a decent quality of life to their citizens through the application of ‘smart solutions’.

The Government of India launched the ‘Smart Cities Mission’ in India on 25 June 2015 with an estimated value of US$13 billion. Since then, India’s Smart Cities have been in the forefront, leveraging technology to manage cities especially during disasters like cyclones, floods, and health epidemics including the ongoing global pandemic of Covid-19.

In this webinar, Mr Kunal Kumar, Joint Secretary and Mission Director (Smart Cities Mission) at the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India, will provide an overview of India's 'Smart Cities Mission', followed by Q&A.

This presentation will launch a monthly webinar series on different topics around 'Smart Cities', presented by the IIT Kanpur-La Trobe University Research Academy, (ASCRIN's node in India).

Speakers:

Professor Abhay Karandikar, Director - IIT Kanpur

Professor Susan Dodds, Acting Vice-Chancellor - La Trobe University

Mr Kunal Kumar, IAS - Joint Secretary and Mission Director (Smart Cities), Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, Government of India
