Before the Roman empire established itself across Europe the Greeks founded settlements around the Mediterranean, and the remains of their cities are still to be seen today.
Perhaps nowhere is this more visible than in the ruins of Paestum in southern Italy, with impressive colonnaded temples which pre-date the Parthenon in Athens. These temples, the extensive ruins, and the surrounding landscape can teach a lot about the Greek culture and way of life, interactions with local Italian populations, and how this came to become part of the Roman empire.
