Type of Event:

La Trobe Art Institute (LAI) is committed to contemporary curatorial practice and devotes part of its exhibition programming to new curatorial voices. In 2018, the first iteration of LAI’s Emerging Curators Program took place, giving a gallery space over to emerging curator Brigid Hansen to produce a project – in this instance a thematic group exhibition.

The Emerging Curators Program is a selection-based initiative that invites submissions from curators/producers/exhibition-makers in the early stages of their career or with limited experience. The curatorial staff at LAI assist as mentors and project advisers, guiding the curators through all facets of preparation and delivery.

We encourage submissions from regionally based practitioners from across Australia and welcome context-sensitive submissions that consider both the location in which the project takes place and audience engagement. LAI encourages projects that are innovative, engage with aspects of current cultural discourse, and push the traditional expectations of project development and delivery. Marginalised and diverse voices are also welcomed and supported.

The LAI Emerging Curators Program is open to ‘curators’ in the early stages of their career. How applicants define themselves and/or their career stage is up to them – some may prefer to be called exhibition maker, collective, producer or director. What constitutes ‘early career’ or even ‘career’ is open to the interpretation of the applicant.

In order to apply, applicants need to submit the following:

  • An example of an exhibition, event, residency or project they have worked on (can be url link, or up to 500 word description)
  • An outline of what they would like to exhibit or produce at LAI  (500 words max, plain English)
  • Up to 5 url links to anything applicants deem relevant (and may include a personal website, examples of previous work or presentations of expected outcomes).

Submissions can be emailed to, or sent to:
LAI Emerging Curators Program
121 View St

The successful applicant will receive a curator fee of $3000 and be allocated a budget for artist fees, courier costs, a commissioning writer’s fee, marketing and other necessary expenses. The curatorial team at LAI will supervise, advise and mentor the applicants through every facet of the process, providing valuable industry experience in exhibition development, design and delivery.

The resulting exhibition will be presented at La Trobe Art Institute in Bendigo, utilising as much or as little of venue as is appropriate to the exhibition needs. There are 2 gallery spaces, 2 courtyards, a foyer and the infrastructural supports of administration and architecture (physical and digital) to work into/with.

The exhibition will take place 31 August to 10 October, 2020.

Applicants are encouraged to visit the venue to assist in their planning. LAI is an advocate for context-sensitivity in curatorial practice. Floor plans of the gallery space are available on request – via email.
