Beyond the dental chair: The role of caregivers in promoting oral health
Associate Professor Nathan Wilson, School of Nursing and Midwifery, University of Western Sydney
This presentation will focus on a small body of research concerned with support for the oral health of people with developmental and intellectual disabilities beyond the dental chair. This group experience significant oral health disparities and caregivers can play a vital role in promoting oral health and preventing negative and avoidable outcomes. Dr. Wilson argues for a clearly articulated systems-led biopsychosocial framework to underpin oral health support for all people with intellectual and developmental disability, no matter the severity of the disability or their oral health status.
Filling in the gaps: Where the problems lie in addressing the oral health of Australians with disability
Dr. Matthew Lim, Consultant at the Royal Melbourne Hospital, Director of Dental Services at The Alfred and President of the Australian and New Zealand Academy of Special Needs Dentistry
This presentation identifies some of the major barriers in Australia's healthcare systems impacting people with disabilities' oral health. The Royal Commission into Violence, Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of People with Disability has focused attention on challenges that exist across the disability sector and the support received by people with disability. However, despite the known barriers that exist within Australia’s health care system, some within the oral health care sector are much more subtle and hidden. These problems are insidious and undermine strategies to improve access to oral health care for people with disability. Dr. Lim will discuss these controversies and consider manners in which to address these issues to improve the oral health of Australians with disability.
