Over three days attendees will live the university lifestyle, staying on campus in our dormitories, with individual sleeping quarters and shared bathrooms and kitchen. Students will be encouraged to interact and learn from each other as much as possible, staying together for meals and activities.

The school will be led by Dr. Donna Whelan, an internationally recognised scientist working on understanding DNA damage and genetic engineering using cutting-edge microscopy. Donna is passionate about communicating and enhancing scientific understanding and appreciation, as well as fostering the next generation of science students, professionals, researchers, and anyone else with the requisite curiosity.

Who this is for: Commencing Year 12 students in 2023 from regional Victoria with a passion for science and an interest in exploring their own futures in biomedical and health-related studies.

Eligibility: Students who live and attend school in regional or rural Victoria are eligible to apply (RA2 to RA5 areas classified by the most recent Australian Statistical Geographic Standard - Remoteness Areas (ASGS-RA) (2016). Competitive selection will be based on their responses to the two short answer questions.

What we provide: Two nights’ accommodation on campus, all meals catered, return transport to Bendigo from regional hometowns (e.g. train/bus tickets), all learning supplies and activities.

How to apply: Answer the following two questions: What makes you passionate about biomedical and/or health science? What are your aspirations for your future in biomedical and health sciences?  Please also provide your contact details, the name of your current school, the Year 12 subjects you are enrolled in, and the name and contact details of a teacher who can provide a reference.
What you can expect to learn

What to expect: Established as part of the Holsworth Biomedical Research Initiative under the auspices of the Bendigo Tertiary Education Anniversary Foundation, the aim of the summer school is to give students a realistic and relevant view of studying and working in the biomedical and/or health sciences, particularly in regional Victoria. The three-day program will feature a mix of information sessions, practical hands-on lab experiments, group-based creative and critical thinking activities, and social events with other attendees, LTU professionals and academics, and local leaders in the biomedical and health science industries.

Information and Q&A sessions will detail the different courses and pathways offered by La Trobe Bendigo, including Bachelor degrees in Science, Biomedical Science, Pharmacy, Health Science, Physiotherapy, Nursing, Midwifery, and Dentistry. Particular focus will be paid to the Bachelor of Biomedical Science (Medical) which provides graduate entry into the University of Melbourne Doctor of Medicine degree in Shepparton. We will detail entrance requirements, how to manage VTAC preferences and expectations, and practice how to excel at entrance interviews and activities. Attendees will meet and be able to talk to current and past La Trobe University students, and industry leaders about their university experience and their careers in biomedical and health science professions.

Students that successfully complete the school will be eligible to apply though the Aspire program and receive a conditional offer to a La Trobe course before they finish their final exams!

Practical lab experiments will expose students to university-level activities, as well as some of our world-class research facilities and projects. This will help prepare the students for Year 12 study, giving them tips for a successful year, as well as an introduction to some of the key big concepts in science. Students will have a chance to experience the types of classes held in our onsite biology labs and model pharmacy. An expected highlight will be a microscopy experience with students welcome to bring their own samples for visualisation, all the way down to the single-molecule level!

Students are expected to function independently, experiencing what it is like to be responsible for managing their time and maximising their experience. To ensure the safety of our attendees, La Trobe University staff members will be present at all times, including at meals and overnight in the on-site accommodation.

Agenda to be provided to successful applicants at a later date.
