Title: Growing a complex, contentious project: the puzzle of police accountability in Victoria
Date: Friday 6 September
Time: 2:00pm – 2:30pm
Location: Online, via Zoom (link provided after registration)
Description: Despite Victoria having a police watchdog, 98% of complaints about police misconduct in Victoria end up being dealt with by police themselves. This is one reason why the Yoorrook Justice Commission has called for a new independent oversight body.
In collaboration with partner organisations, we are mapping out all the pieces of the police accountability puzzle, analysing the limits and failures of the existing system. We’re also exploring essential features of the new body: independent, complainant-centred, trauma informed and culturally safe.
