About this event:
Learn bilum stich and about Papua New Guinean weaving from Aunty Vicky Kinai as part of the Interwoven Project at LAI.
Aunty Vicki Kinai says:
“Every piece I create tells a story, that connects me to people, place and land, whether it is a story about my current homeland of Australia or my birthplace of PNG. Every creation has relevance and connection.
As a migrant I believe in sharing weaving and stories with people as well as listening to their stories. Through these engagements people connect, share, laugh, learn or just observe!
I believe the way to celebrate culture is to “teach your culture and learn others cultures”
My home land of Papua New Guinea is known for its thousands of traditional cultures. I realised I could share one tradition and that is weaving bag we call Bilum, using a traditional technique. . I call it a “Figure Eight” weaving! As a weaver, I have designed my own format to teach it, and I have been using this format quite successfully!
I am committed to the preserving this tradition and in endorsing “bilum weaving” as an art form no matter where I am in the world.”
