La Trobe University staff members, Dr Bec Strating (Senior Lecturer, Politics and International Relations) and Dr Euan Graham (Executive Director, La Trobe Asia) were recently invited to sail with the Australian Defence Force (ADF) during its ‘Indo-Pacific Endeavour’, a joint task force activity encompassing a suite of exercises and engagements over a two-month period.

This offered them a rare frontline insight into the ADF’s joint operations and defence diplomacy in Asia, on board the nation’s flagship, HMAS Canberra, as it sailed around Southeast Asia, as part of a Royal Australian Navy task group. This is the first time for academics to observe one of the ADF’s newest and most important annual activities in a critical region for Australia’s security.

They will recount personal highlights from their experiences during different segments of the exercise, variously covering Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam - including pictures taken along the way. This is a great opportunity for La Trobe students and staff as well as interested members of the public to learn more about life onboard a modern warship, as well as the aims and objectives of Indo-Pacific Endeavour 2019.
