'Asian Studies in Focus' Seminar Series - Seminar # 6
Dr Chunmei Pan – Lecturer and Coordinator of Chinese Studies Program, Department of Languages and Cultures, La Trobe University
What is Confucianism? Is it a philosophy, a religion, a social ethic, a political ideology, a scholarly tradition, or a way of life? Does Confucianism still matter today? There seems no easy answer to these questions.
This seminar introduces Ma Yifu 馬一浮 (1883-1967), who is widely recognized as “a great master of National Studies (guoxue dashi 國學大師) and one of “three sages” of New Confucianism along with Xiong Shili 熊十力 (1885-1968) and Liang Shuming 梁漱溟 (1893-1988) and focuses on his understanding of Confucianism. It also provides both positive and negative assessments of Ma Yifu’s views on Confucianism by different scholars.
