This event is a part of a series of events presented by Thesis Eleven this coming November in both Melbourne and Sydney celebrating the life and work of Agnes Heller.

Chair: Trevor Hogan, La Trobe University
Introduction: Peter Beilharz, Sichuan University
Speakers: David Roberts, John Carroll, Peter Murphy, Sian Supski, Jiayang Qin and FengMing Deng

Agnes Heller worked at La Trobe Sociology for eight rich years, 1978-1986. She and her colleagues of the Budapest School had a transformative effect on local culture, which also had a serious effect upon them.

Our plan for this year’s Heller lecture was to have Agnes deliver the Agnes Heller Sociology Lecture. Her death on July 19 made this impossible. In its stead, we will celebrate her life and work with a memorial panel.

Three figures who helped bring Agnes to Melbourne or who worked with her early will open: David Roberts (Monash) John Carroll and Peter Murphy (La Trobe).

Three who came to Agnes later will share their views to follow – Sian Supski (Melbourne), Jiayang Qin and FengMing Deng (Sichuan University).

Contributions from the floor are welcome.
