What you'll learn
In this field course you will explore alpine and sub-alpine ecosystems in detail during daytime excursions, team based research work, and through evening discussions and lectures. The course will cover aspects of alpine geology, hydrology, soils, and aquatic and terrestrial plant and animal communities. Current and potential future threats to alpine ecosystems will also be addressed.
This subject is an introduction to field research and will be suitable for aspiring park managers, ecologists and anyone interested in a career working in science and the environment.
Pre-trip and post-trip requirements
Pre-trip materials including background reading will be provided online. Your knowledge of the concepts and details will be assessed before the field trip to Falls Creek.
Post field trip commitments will involve completion of a report based on the project work you have conducted.
Those taking the subject will spend half a day travelling by bus from the Albury-Wodonga campus to Falls Creek, Victoria, and another half day on the return journey.
Six full days will be spent on the High Plains studying the ecology of the flora and fauna and aspects of the physical environment.
The subject is available to students from the College of Science, Health and Engineering. Priority will be given to students enrolled in:
- Bachelor of Animal and Veterinary Bioscience (based on academic merit)
- Bachelor of Biological Sciences and Bachelor of Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology)
A field trip form will be sent to students after enrolment.
It is expected that students doing this subject will have completed 45 credit points of 2nd year science subjects. If this is not the case, you will need to seek an exemption from the Subject Co-ordinator.
This subject is open to students on ALL campuses; all content apart from the field trip will be delivered online.
Students who withdraw from the subject after the specified cut off date will not be refunded the accommodation component of the field trip.
