Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Curriculum, Teaching and Learning
The Graduate Certificate in Higher Education Curriculum, Teaching and Learning (RCHE) provides academic staff and professional staff in teaching and learning roles an opportunity to undertake a teaching qualification that accredits practice-based learning about teaching.
The course requires the completion of four 15 credit point subjects which can be taken part-time over two years or full-time over one year.
Staff will actively participate in flexibly delivered academic seminars facilitated by an academic lecturer.
They will engage with digital resources to complete assessment tasks based on teaching practice and informed by theory.
Participants will collect evidence of excellence in teaching delivery, design and leadership throughout the course.
How to Apply, Accept, & Enrol
To be eligible for the course, you must be employed at La Trobe University, or its associated Third Party Provider Institutions, in a learning and teaching-related role.
Applicants who do not have a completed Undergraduate degree will be required to outline their professional equivalence.
Fixed or ongoing full-time staff may apply directly, however, sessional staff must provide an endorsement from their Head of School or Head of Department. The signed Sessional Staff Endorsement Letter will need to be uploaded as a supporting document when applying for the course.
Staff from an associated Third Party Provider Institution must provide endorsement from a Head of School or Head of Department at La Trobe University. The signed Third Party Provider Endorsement Letter will need to be uploaded as a supporting document when applying for the course.
This course is not available to student visa holders. Applicants who are not Australian citizens or permanent residents or New Zealand citizens must hold a visa which allows them to undertake study in Australia.

The course provides participants with the scholarly basis to develop and extend their teaching, learning, and curriculum knowledge, skills and decision-making capacities. Participants will develop a deep knowledge and understanding of the key theories and standards in online teaching and curriculum design, and the ability to apply this in practice. Informed by the research into higher education teaching and learning, the course situates the practices of teaching, learning and curriculum development within debates about the changing nature of higher education. In particular, it encourages participants to consider what might be done to improve student engagement and learning. The course has been specifically designed so that participants can apply their learning to relevant practical issues and challenges in their own work and professional contexts.

Participants have the option to focus their learning on aspects of higher education curriculum, teaching and learning of interest to them.
Course Intended Learning Outcomes
On completion of the course, you will have had the opportunity to:
- Critically analyse adult learning theory, teaching and assessment practices and curriculum and assessment design principles within the policy and political context of Higher Education.
- Apply key learning, teaching and curriculum principles and relevant institutional policies to your professional practice in higher education
- Develop a student centred-approach to your own professional practice in relation to learning, teaching, assessment, and curriculum, including the use of appropriate learning technologies.
- Integrate a scholarly approach to your practice regarding the purpose of higher education, curriculum, learning and teaching, and your ongoing professional development.
- Apply knowledge, comprehension and skills of reflective teaching practice to your own professional practice in higher education.
Recognition of prior learning and credit for previous study
Credit for previous study is available. You will need to provide the following evidence:
- a formal transcript
- a description of the learning outcomes of the subject/unit/module completed.
The course is designed so that staff can accumulate subject completions over time. Attainment of the RCHE requires completion of the four subjects above (each 15 credit points). However, you can undertake a subject and decide not to complete the course depending on your interests and needs.
If you undertake a professional development activity that maps to the Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs) for one of the subjects, you may be able to obtain an exemption for that subject if you can demonstrate how you have met the subject ILOs. Applications for exemptions can be made online.
