The Department is an innovative research hub that focuses on delivering research outcomes that have significant impact on the community and is home to researchers from around the globe, specialising in economics and finance.
While many of our staff conduct individual research in their areas of specialisation, the Department actively promotes cross disciplinary research that delivers effective outcomes for the private, public and non-profit sectors.
La Trobe ranks ‘well above world standard’, and one of the top four in Australia, for Banking, Finance & Investment research, and our Economics and Applied Economics research also rank ‘at world standard’ (Australian Research Council, 2019, Excellence in Research for Australia (ERA) Outcomes 2018).
We have a diverse research program in economics and finance, including asset pricing and investment, corporate finance and governance, financial market microstructure and information, and financial econometrics and quantitative finance. Our academic staff members often publish influential papers with high impact in leading journals. We offer active Honours and PhD programs with our academic members available for PhD supervision in their respective research fields.
Our strong research focus and industry experience has enabled us to successfully develop and offer a range of postgraduate coursework degrees. Our highly popular Master of Financial Analysis provides a comprehensive coverage of the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) curriculum and industry-linked subjects, with specializations in financial planning, financial risk management, and investment, along with double degrees with Business Administration, International Business, and Accounting.
