Why this course?

This course will incorporate both theoretical and experiential learning to guide you through a gentle and mindful exploration of diverse art materials and processes. This workshop will include slide show presentations, case study presentations, individual art making experiences, and group discussion. You'll create, reflect and explore personal meaning, and also experience the potential of art-making as a tool for personal growth, connectedness and self-awareness.

The workshop is suitable for a wide range of backgrounds and professional practitioners, including prospective students of the Master of Art Therapy.  

Course content

The first day will offer an overview of the key principles of art therapy, including the power of non-verbal expression and connecting to a creative self. A case study will also demonstrate the use of art therapy with children and adolescents living with cancer. A brief overview of the Master of Art Therapy course will be offered.

 The second day will focus on the impact and use of different art materials in art therapy, such as fluid and resistive materials. Experiential art-making and group discussion will identify how different art materials can elicit a range of responses in participants. This course involves a mixture if individual art-making, discussion in small groups and also a group art-making experience.

You’ll learn:

An introductory understanding of art therapy processes, including through experiential and theoretical learnings. Please note that this short course will not qualify you to practise art therapy with clients, rather it will offer an overview of what art therapy entails.

Your study experience

All art materials will be provided, and the course will be held in the purpose-built Art Therapy Studio at the Bundoora campus. Morning and afternoon tea will be also be provided.

This course is subject to minimum enrolment numbers.  A refund will be provided if the course is cancelled.

Who you’ll learn from

Caryn Griffin 

Caryn Griffin is a lecturer for the Master of Art Therapy program at La Trobe University. Caryn has worked as an art therapist for a range of community organisations that support the mental health of children, adolescents, adults, and families. When not at La Trobe University, Caryn works in private practice, mainly supporting children with cancer. She also works for a women’s mental health organisation running groups. In addition to her clinical work, Caryn has conducted research into the use of art therapy to support the ongoing recovery of adults with eating disorders at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. Caryn has coordinated the art therapy short courses at La Trobe University since 2017, and she is also a lecturer in the Master of Art Therapy course. Caryn has published articles in the Arts in Psychotherapy and Journal of Applied Arts & Health, and spoken at conferences about her research and practice. She is a co-editor of the Journals of Creative Arts Therapy.

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.

I need to defer my registration. How do I go about this? 

Prior to your course commencing, you may request a deferral of your registration to the next available course date, by contacting executive_professional_education@latrobe.edu.au.
