Why this course?

This microcredential, advances on the concepts covered in Introduction to Digital Networks, and covers the design of addressing schemes to solve problems across different network sizes,  and the operation and comparison of various network protocols.

 

Together with its companion course, this microcredential can be stacked into a subject for potential advanced standing in the Master of Cybersecurity.

Course content

 Topics include:

  • Internet protocols and addressing networks - Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) and IPv6
  • Network device configuration, using a Cisco IOS router
  • Functions of the data link layer wiht the Media Access Control Method
  • Transport and application layers - how TCP and UDP use port numbers and how end-user applications work in a peer-to-peer network.

On successful completion of this course, you wil be awarded a digital credential and earn 10 credit points that can be accumulated with its partner course, 'Introduction to Digital Networks', to stack into 'Network Engineering Fundamentals (CSE4001)', a subject within the Master of Cybersecurity.

  • Designing addressing schemes to solve problems across different network sizes, using different approaches

  • Analysing the operation and performance of various network protocols

  • Debugging and troubleshooting errors in different LAN sizes using different methodologies.

Your study experience

The course is delivered online with live sessions, over a 4 week period, and the total expected time commitment is up to 80 hours.  

The assessment for this course comprises:

  • Practical demonstration (35%)
  • Written assignment (35%)
  • Online examination (30%).

Access to courses is generally available two weeks in advance of the scheduled course start date, or as advised in the registration confirmation email.  Course materials are made available via our Learning Management System (LMS) for which you will be provided with your username and initial password.
