Here at La Trobe, we’re always looking for new ways to make it easier for students to enter the career they want, without barriers such as cost, location or time.
That’s why we’ve developed the Aptitude for Teaching Assessment (AFTA). Approved by the Victorian Institute of Teaching, it’s a non-cognitive scenario-based aptitude test that you can use as an alternative to the CASPer test. Please note: It can only be used for entry into initial teaching education programs at La Trobe.
Best of all, it’s available online, on-demand and completely free.
Course content
The program is a non-cognitive scenario-based online test designed to assess your personal and professional attributes. The assessment is divided into five sections, with each section representing an attribute. Within each section, you’ll be provided with three written scenarios, presented one at a time. The scenarios are randomised, and each section must be completed before you progress to the next section. This is an aptitude test that assesses your communication, self-regulated learning, teamwork, professionalism and problem-solving skills.
Your study experience
You’ll access the test online via our learning management system, the LMS. Working at your own pace, you’ll work through the material before attempting the test, which takes approximately 30-60 minutes to complete.
If you don’t pass the test on your first try, we’ll provide you with support material so you can develop your understanding and take the test again. If you don’t pass on your second try, we’ll direct you to contact our Associate Dean of Learning and Teaching, who’ll provide you with further support and information about other pathways to study teaching at La Trobe.
