Entry requirements and pathways
International students

Academic entry requirement

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Specialisation - compulsory: Sport and/or business and/or STEM-/or relevant industry experience as determined by Course Coordinator

Prior learning developed through relevant work experience or professional accreditation, where it is deemed to be at least equivalent to that obtained through a Bachelor degree, may be considered. In making an offer to an applicant, the University will give consideration to a range of factors, including academic record, English proficiency and/or employment experience.

Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

English language requirement

6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Please refer to our English Language Requirements page for details of other accepted English Proficiency tests and additional recognised English Language Proficiency Measures, such as English as the language of instruction.

Core participation requirements

Core Participation Requirements are abilities, attributes and behaviours that are required to undertake learning activities and professional experience in your course. These requirements are provided for your information and are not entry requirements. Core Participation Requirements are also referred to as Inherent Requirements by other institutions.

La Trobe University wants you to understand the Core Participation Requirements of your course so you can:

  • determine if you may need support during your studies; and
  • make an informed decision about whether the course is suitable for you.

If there are any Core Participation Requirements listed below that you do not feel capable of demonstrating, we may be able to make adjustments that may support your studies. Please contact the AccessAbility Hub or your Course Coordinator to discuss any adjustments you may need.

As a La Trobe student, you will also need to abide by the Student Charter and meet any professional accreditation requirements of your course.

Students must demonstrate appropriate behavioural and interpersonal communication skills that will allow them to manage learning environments given varied teaching methods and diverse staff and student backgrounds and perspectives.

Students must be able to follow instruction, seek out and use retained knowledge to make appropriate decisions and actions as they progress through their course. They must be able to sustain their attention during practical learning activities and to complete complex assessment tasks.

Students must be able to manipulate, analyse, visualise and present data for interpretation and communication.

Students must be able manage computer hardware and software.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)

Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.

The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

To check if this course is available for credit, please visit the Advanced standing webpage.

About the Master of Sport Analytics

Designed in collaboration with industry, La Trobe's Master of Sport Analytics gives you the skills and experience needed to excel in this exciting and fast-growing industry. It's an ideal choice if you're already working in sport and want to upskill, or have an interest in data analytics and want to apply your knowledge to sport. Whatever your background, our academics and industry partners will support you to succeed.

Learn how to use data to boost athlete performance and wellbeing. You'll get hands-on experience with industry-standard technologies, such as wearable sensors (Catapult GPS and IMeasureU accelerometers), computer vision and video annotation software (Keemotion and Sportscode), and athlete management systems.

See where your new skills could take you. You'll cover talent ID, athlete management, performance and injury modelling, and broadcasting and fan engagement during your degree. You'll develop an intricate understanding of cutting-edge machine learning techniques and use advanced analytics tools, including R, Python and SQL – all required for a successful career in sport analytics and data science.

In your second year, you'll have the opportunity to complete a practical learning project. You could work under the supervision of an industry expert or academic and hone your data analysis skills in a real industry setting. Previous students have completed projects with Tennis Australia, AFL Victoria, Champion Data, and Carlton and St Kilda Football Clubs.

You'll learn:

  • Sport analytics methods
    • Understand the basic practices for capturing, handling, cleaning and processing data generated from sport.
  • Generating insights from data
    • Learn how to use data to develop insights into talent identification, athlete management, injury management and fan engagement.
  • Machine learning techniques
    • Understand and use data-programmed machines to detect patterns and predict future sporting events.
  • Data visualisations
    • Learn to select and use analytical tools and visualisations to clearly communicate outcomes and findings.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
