Academic entry requirement
Prerequisites
Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
Applicants who completed their Bachelor degree more than five years ago may still be eligible on the basis of postgraduate study and/or relevant work experience.
Applicants may supply their resumé if completed degree more than 5 years ago.
Specialisation - compulsory: Exercise Science, completed within the last five years. Essential prerequisites studies in Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise Physiology, Biomechanics, Exercise Psychology, and Motor Control and Learning.
Only candidates eligible for accreditation by Exercise and Sports Science Australia (ESSA) as an exercise scientist can be admitted to this course.
Selection criteria
All applicants must complete and submit a Personal Statement.
Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
English language requirement
6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)
Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.
The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

To qualify for the award of Master of Exercise Physiology, students must complete a total of 180 credit points across 1 year.

Work-Based Learning
Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the College based Placements Operation Team or Experiential Learning Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

Course intended learning outcomes
- Critically analyse health outcomes and data to design and deliver a broad range of health care services as appropriate, complying with the foundational scope of practice of an accredited exercise physiologist.
- Analyse individual risk, capacity and function and apply appropriate risk mitigation strategies when designing and implementing clinical exercise programs for people with health conditions and injury.
- Apply relevant clinical frameworks to support the adoption and compliance with clinical exercise, guide treatment, and communicate these effectively to individuals and members of the health care team.
- Evaluate and adapt communication strategies to enhance teamwork, interprofessional practice, and clinical outcomes.
- Reflect on published evidence and individual practices to refine and ensure health care practices are safe and respectful for people with diverse backgrounds.
- Evaluate, synthesise and create evidence surrounding the delivery of clinical exercise services to lead new concepts for professional practice.
Master of Exercise Physiology career opportunities
Accredited Exercise physiologists are specialists who use exercise interventions to condition clients for optimal health/performance and to treat patients with, or at elevated risk of developing, chronic illness or injury. The demand for accredited exercise physiologists is high, and expected to increase in future years, due to various factors including the ageing Australian population and an increased demand on the health care system due to chronic diseases such as obesity and diabetes.
Professional recognition
The Master of Exercise Physiology is accredited at the level of exercise physiology by Exercise and Sports Science, Australia (ESSA).Graduates of the Master of Exercise Physiology may apply for membership with ESSA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

About the Master of Exercise Physiology
Exercise physiologists specialise in designing and delivering exercise, lifestyle and behavioural modification programs for people throughout the community, including those with chronic illnesses and health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes and arthritis. This course aims to provide the skills and knowledge to design and implement exercise programs for people with known disease. Theory and practice are integrated through supervised clinical experience and clinically related studies. You will develop strong clinical and professional skills to prescribe and monitor exercise to assess and enhance health and function after injury or chronic disease.
The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
