Subject prerequisites

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 20 in any Mathematics.

Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or at least 20 in English other than EAL.

English language requirement

6.0 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)

Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.

The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

To qualify for the award of Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Industrial), students must complete a total of 480 credit points across 4 years.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

Work-Based Learning

Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the College based Placements Operation Team or Experiential Learning Team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

Students not undertaking the Work Integrated Learning subjects (EMS4WLA and EMS4WLB) are required to complete at least 12 weeks certified practical experience under the guidance of an experienced engineer before being deemed to have completed the course and therefore qualify to graduate. This is preferably undertaken during the annual vacation following the third year of the course but may be done at the conclusion of the final year. International students must undertake their experience during the annual vacation following the third year. It may be done at the conclusion of final year but must be completed before the student's visa expiry date. Visa expiry dates may not be extended for the sole purpose of completing practical experience. International applicants are advised to ensure they have the correct visa to undertake this work placement.

Year 1

Year 2

After completing 2 years of full-time study

You can exit with an Associate Degree in Engineering Technology

You can exit with a Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Industrial)

Course intended learning outcomes

  • Apply the principles and technical knowledge of engineering and use the current tools and techniques to solve engineering problems
  • Use mathematical tools and techniques to achieve appropriate solutions to engineering problems
  • Critically investigate a problem for the purpose of formulating and evaluating an appropriate, effective engineering solutions
  • Evaluate information to review, assess and suggest improvements to plans and processes
  • Demonstrate an awareness of social, cultural and environmental issues when solving engineering problems and abide by the professional and ethical requirements mandated by Engineers Australia
  • Communicate technical information orally, in writing and/or by drawings to both technical and non-technical audiences clearly and concisely
  • Collaborate and contribute effectively as both a team leader and a team member to achieve team goals
  • Develop and test novel, logical solutions for problems and risks relevant to industrial engineering

You could work in a wide range of sectors, such as aerospace, defence, natural resources, renewable energy, oil, gas, pharmaceutical and biotechnology, mining or electronics.

    • Oversee the manufacturing of products to ensure quality and standards are maintained.

    • Analyse and manage organisational supply chains from supplier to consumer.

    • Support the research and development of medical applications, treatments or diagnostic technologies.

The Bachelor of Engineering Honours (Industrial) is accredited by Engineers Australia (EA). Professional membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree. Destination Australia – an Australian Government initiative

The Destination Australia scheme supports new international students to study in regional Australia and offers students a high-quality learning experience. For eligible applicants, these scholarships are worth up to A$15 000 per annum for up to four years.

International students applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate course to study at La Trobe University can be rewarded a bonus grant for completing their admission process early. Recipients will automatically be eligible to receive an Early Bird Acceptance Grant of 5% of the first-year tuition fees.

If you’re a high-achieving international student from either Vietnam, Cambodia or the Philippines and are considering full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study, you can apply to receive a 50 - 100 per cent tuition fees scholarship for the duration of your studies from 2024.

Do you have an excellent academic record? La Trobe High Achiever Scholarships are awarded to high-achieving international students and provide up to a 25 per cent reduction in course fees for selected courses.
