Academic entry requirement

Prerequisites

Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).

Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

English language requirement

6.5 IELTS (Academic) with no individual band less than 6.0.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)

Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.

The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

Sample course structure

To qualify for the award of Master of Cybersecurity , students must complete a total of 240 credit points across 2 years.

Year 1 requires the completion of 120 credit points including:

  • 105 credit points from chosen Core
  • 15 credit points from chosen Electives

  • Critically analyse complex problems in cybersecurity through the application of theoretical frameworks and integration of research and practice knowledge
  • Synthesise and test theories in cybersecurity using research and technical skill that address the mindsets and motivations of cyber-criminals.
  • Apply awareness of contemporary social and ethical issues to professional decision-making and leadership in cybersecurity.
  • Apply complex techniques and project management skills to identify and resolve complex cybersecurity problems and risks.
  • Evaluate strategies for industry-based cybersecurity problems and events in specialist areas.

Master of Cybersecurity career opportunities

Combining cybersecurity with artificial intelligence, business operations or computer science puts you at the front line of defence against cybercrime. Graduate ready for your career as a:

  • Security architect
    • Plan, implement and supervise computer and network security systems.

  • Cyber intelligence analyst
    • Use your knowledge in areas like network administration or network engineering to help counter the activities of cybercriminals such as hackers and developers of malicious software.

  • Compliance assurance manager
    • Support cybersecurity and privacy assurance and develop and manage security and risk for communications and technology.

  • Cybersecurity consultant
    • Play both the attacker and the defender to optimise computer systems, networks and software programs.

  • Cybersecurity policy adviser
    • Work independently on different aspects of the advisory model. Understand, assess and articulate complex business, markets and cyber policy, and implement cyber policies.
  • Cyber risk manager

Professional recognition

The Master of Cybersecurity is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Graduates of the Master of Cybersecurity may apply for membership with the ACS. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Destination Australia – an Australian Government initiative

The Destination Australia scheme supports new international students to study in regional Australia and offers students a high-quality learning experience. For eligible applicants, these scholarships are worth up to A$15 000 per annum for up to four years.

International students applying for an undergraduate or postgraduate course to study at La Trobe University can be rewarded a bonus grant for completing their admission process early. Recipients will automatically be eligible to receive an Early Bird Acceptance Grant of 5% of the first-year tuition fees.

If you’re a high-achieving international student from either Vietnam, Cambodia or the Philippines and are considering full-time undergraduate or postgraduate study, you can apply to receive a 50 - 100 per cent tuition fees scholarship for the duration of your studies from 2024.

Do you have an excellent academic record? La Trobe High Achiever Scholarships are awarded to high-achieving international students and provide up to a 25 per cent reduction in course fees for selected courses.

Note: You must first have an offer to study at La Trobe before you are eligible to apply for a La Trobe scholarship.

About the Master of Cybersecurity

La Trobe's Master of Cybersecurity prepares you for a successful career in this fast-growing field, whether you have an IT background or not.

The degree has been carefully designed by industry leaders to first give you a strong foundation in cybersecurity, then invite you to specialise in either computer science, business operations or artificial intelligence.

Build fundamental skills in system design, implementation, testing and documentation. Develop technical expertise in pen testing, blockchain and cyber forensics, and get hands-on experience applying your knowledge in our state-of-the-art Internet of Things (IoT) and wireless labs. You'll also get to hone your networking skills in our CISCO networking and security labs.

Cybersecurity is about so much more than just technology. This degree explores the psychology of hacking and cybercrime, the legal and ethical frameworks you'll be working within, and approaches to governance and risk management.

Begin building your career while you study. Industry-based learning opportunities embedded throughout this degree give you the change to not only build practical experience, but also start developing your professional network. You'll work on a real industry project alongside our industry partners, undertake a professional placement, or, if you're working towards a research career, complete a thesis on emerging topics in cybersecurity.

Early exit points mean that every part of your degree contributes to your future career. Exit after six months with a Graduate Certificate in Information Technology Fundamentals, or after one year with a Graduate Diploma in Cybersecurity.

  • Ethical hacking and defence
    • Learn techniques for evaluating the security of network configurations and defending against network-based threats.

  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning
    • Learn artificial intelligence-based cyber resilience and attack detection as well as deep learning-based cyber analytics.

  • Cyber governance and risk management
    • Learn the frameworks for cybersecurity governance based on an understanding of business strategy and risk appetite.
  • Secure programming
    • Learn a procedural language. Identify and analyse common coding practices that can avoid security vulnerabilities.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9 - Masters Degree.
