Entry requirements and pathways
Academic entry requirement
Prerequisites
Successful completion of an Australian bachelor degree (or equivalent).
Specialisation - compulsory: In a relevant discipline area for primary teaching as per the National Program Standards, the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) and the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA). For a primary focus these may include; Science, Mathematics, Arts (Visual Arts/Drama/Music/Dance/Media Studies), Humanities (Geography, History), Languages, Physical Education/Health, English, IT.
Applicants intending to study this course in NSW (Sydney Campus) must also:
1. possess at least a Band 4 result in a prior HSC mathematics course, or
2. have undertaken at least 0.125 EFTSL (1 unit) of mathematics/numeracy in the prior bachelor degree or equivalent qualification, or
3. pass a bridging unit (in addition to the course units) that is benchmarked to a NSW Education Standards Authority HSC Band (see below)
Those students who do not meet this requirements can undertake a bridging course. Unilearn UNL31 Introductory mathematics. Applicants who complete this course must submit a copy of their Unilearn Statement of Achievement and transcript with their application. Refer to Unilearn Introductory Mathematics page for further information.
Selection criteria
All applicants will complete a situation judgement test to support selection into teaching programs. This is a requirement for initial teacher training courses in Victoria and aims to assess an applicants personal and professional attributes. You can either register to sit the online CASPer Test or the La Trobe University School of Education Aptitude for Teaching Assessment (AFTA). You can register for the AFTA online test for free.
Note: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Credit for previous study (advanced standing)
Credit for previous study (advanced standing) is the recognition of prior study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous study and the number of subjects completed.
The University will designate courses where there is only admission into Year 1 of the course. In these cases, there is limited credit. See list of limited entry courses.

To qualify for the award of Master of Teaching (Primary), students must complete a total of 240 credit points across 2 years.
Students who began this course in semester 1 2024 will be completing EDU5018 UNDERSTANDING RESEARCH FOR PROFESSIONAL ENQUIRY while students who began the course in semester 2 2024 and onwards will be completing EDU5028 DIVERSE LEARNERS AND PEDAGOGY.

Work-Based Learning
Compulsory placements (Work Based Learning)
During this course, you will participate in one or more supervised Work Based Learning (WBL) placements designed to allow you to practice newly acquired skills, behaviours and knowledge while integrating theory with practice. The placements will immerse you in professional work culture, enabling you to develop and further enhance your skills. WBL provides you with the opportunity to gain valuable industry experience at one or more of our local, interstate or international industry partners or agencies. WBL placements will generally be arranged by the Partnerships Operations team at La Trobe University. The number of hours undertaken can vary considerably, depending on the requirements of the course. Students may incur additional costs and it may be necessary to travel or relocate to complete a specific placement. Please refer to the individual subject entries for more information.

Course intended learning outcomes
- Evaluate literacy and numeracy needs for all stakeholders in a teacher education context.
- Design, plan and implement a range of developmentally and educationally appropriate programs in Primary contexts.
- Demonstrate the capacity to act as a reflective practitioner across a range of educational settings.
- Design and implement assessment, feedback and reporting strategies, that complement and support learning processes and are inclusive of diagnostic, formative and summative practices.
- Demonstrate well-developed, professional knowledge and skills of teaching, including state curricula, curriculum theory, teaching methodologies and classroom management which are aligned to the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers (APST).
- Investigate and evaluate current and predicted future practices in teaching, schooling and education, including appropriate practices to diverse and inclusive needs students, managing changing learning environments, and priority needs in the education system.
- Work independently and collaboratively with peers, colleagues and supervisors in the preparation, application and/or evaluation of teaching and learning experiences and resources for effective student learning.
