If you're an engineer who wants to specialise in the rapidly evolving telecommunication and network field, our Master of Telecommunication and Network Engineering can get you there. Communication and network technologies have changed significantly in recent years, and we'll give you the knowledge and practical experience to meet the challenges of this industry.

Our course focuses on computer, internet, multimedia and telecommunication technology from high-level specification of telecommunications systems through to the realisation of communication circuits.

First-year core subjects introduce you to fundamental areas including broadband digital communication, engineering practice and communication networks. In second year, you'll move into more advanced areas including personal mobile communications, antennas and propagation, and current experimental practices in electronics and telecommunications. A core subject is the design exercise, which involves using state-of-the-art software to design telecommunication, mobile and electronic systems.

When you combine studies in network engineering you’ll be able to work in the design and development of new systems including computer networks, signal processing, wireless systems, and hardware and software development.

Our graduates have found employment as business analysts, network engineers, development engineers, programs analysts and technical project leads.

You can study our course for two years full-time or four years part-time at our Melbourne Campus. There's a limited number of Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships available, where you can get up to a 20 per cent discount on course fees.

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirement

A four-year Australian Bachelor's degree in electronics, telecommunications, or computer engineering, or an Honours degree in science in an appropriate field, or approved international equivalent. A minimum background in digital logic, communication systems, mathematics at second year level and basic programming skills in C or C++. If you do not strictly meet these requirements, you may be considered for admission following successful completion of the Graduate Diploma in Electronic Engineering.

NB: Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

English language requirement

IELTS (Academic): minimum score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0.

TOEFL Paper-based Test: minimum score of 575 (minimum score of 5 in the Test of Written English).

TOEFL Internet-based Test: minimum score of 80 with minimum overall for SLR 18; W 22.

La Trobe Melbourne (ELICOS): Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B at La Trobe Melbourne with minimum 60 per cent overall and 60 per cent in final exam. For more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.

English as the language of instruction in tertiary studies may be accepted.

Please note: English as the language of instruction in previous study will not be accepted as a basis of admission (English)

for courses where the approved test score requirement is above an IELTS 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0.

Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): minimum score of 64 with no communicative skill score less than 59.

Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): a grade of B or higher.

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of C or higher.

Or approved international equivalent.
