There’s a global shortage of skilled ICT professionals, so qualified graduates are highly sought-after for a range of roles across multiple sectors. La Trobe’s Master of Computer Science will equip you for roles in systems and security engineering, data communications and network design, to name but a few.

Our course will give you the expertise to design, program, manage, maintain and improve computer systems, particularly knowledge-based systems. When you graduate, you'll have strong leadership skills and an understanding of the social, legal and ethical issues facing computing professionals.

We provide training in the software technologies required by information and communications technology professionals. Core subjects include an industry-based project and thesis, which will allow you to explore an area of interest and develop your research skills.

Our wide range of electives gives you the flexibility to develop a skill-set tailored to your interests. Choose electives from areas including data mining, advanced databases, entrepreneurship, wireless network engineering and cloud computing.

Our graduates are working as senior IT architects, software developers, quality assurance engineers and subject matter experts at multinationals such as Nike, Fujitsu and Thomson Reuters. They’ve also secured full-time employment as analysts and specialists at not-for-profit organisations such as UNICEF and Vision Australia.

You can study the course for two years full-time, or up to four years part-time.

There are also a limited number of Postgraduate Excellence Scholarships available that will deliver you a 20 per cent reduction of your course fees.

Entry requirements

Academic entry requirement

The minimum entry requirement is successful completion of an Australian Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in computer science with a minimum Weighted Mark Average (WAM) 65% (or its equivalent as based on the level of standard assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition) in their previous qualification. Applicants who have successfully completed a four-year engineering Australian bachelor degree with a substantial computer science content, equivalent to a three-year computer science degree with a minimum Weighted Average Mark (WAM) 65% (or its equivalent as based on the level of standard assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition) in their previous qualification may also be considered. International applicants must also have obtained a minimum score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0 in IELTS (Academic), or an equivalent English language test.

NB: Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

English language requirement

IELTS (Academic): minimum score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0.

TOEFL Paper-based Test: minimum score of 575 (minimum score of 5 in the Test of Written English).

TOEFL Internet-based Test: minimum score of 80 with minimum overall for SLR 18; W 22.

La Trobe Melbourne (ELICOS): Completion of the English for Further Studies Advanced Stage 6B at La Trobe Melbourne with minimum 60 per cent overall and 60 per cent in final exam. For more information please visit the La Trobe Melbourne website.

for courses where the approved test score requirement is above an IELTS 6.5 with no band score lower than 6.0.

Pearson Test of English (Academic) (PTE): minimum score of 64 with no communicative skill score less than 59.

Cambridge Certificate of Advanced English (CAE): a grade of B or higher.

Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE): a grade of C or higher.

Or approved international equivalent.

Additional information

You can specialise in computer networks and software engineering streams by choosing appropriate subjects. If students have completed a Postgraduate Diploma in Computer Science or an Honours degree in computer science, engineering, or equivalent, they may be eligible Advanced Standing (credit) for some subjects.
