Fees and costs
$38,600 per 120 credit points (students only complete 60 credit points)* * The tuition fee La Trobe will charge you for undertaking the course in is $19,300. This does not include tuition fees for the Graduate Certificate subjects. If you have completed the Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, you only need to complete the last 60 credit points of the Masters program.

Our program in musculoskeletal physiotherapy has run since 1983 and attracts qualified practitioners from around Australia. Our experienced postgraduate physiotherapy educators have positioned us as an industry leader in Australia.

This course is designed to allow you to complete your education in your own time with minimal disruption to your work and home life. You can study part-time over one or two years. Please note: to be eligible for enrolment in this course you must be a qualified and fully registered physiotherapist with Australian residency.

You will access cutting edge knowledge from some of Australias best physiotherapy clinicians and educators, including Olympic physiotherapists, Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) and AFL physiotherapists, Specialist Musculoskeletal and Sports Physiotherapists (as awarded by the Australian Physiotherapy Association), as well as world leading researchers in the area of musculoskeletal physiotherapy.

Your 160 hours of supervised clinical practice will be completed in hospital outpatient departments and/or private physiotherapy clinics, under the supervision of APA registered musculoskeletal physiotherapists. This will give you the opportunity to improve your skills in examining a client's spinal and/or peripheral musculoskeletal regions. You will also get a chance to integrate advanced manipulative physiotherapy manual techniques and exercise prescription into your clinical practice.

Once you have completed the course, you can apply for the title of APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist and be eligible to continue your journey towards specialisation.

The degree will give you a competitive advantage when applying for jobs in private practice or for advanced senior roles in the public sector.

Entry requirements

Prerequisites

- Bachelor of Physiotherapy or equivalent
- Graduate Certificate in Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy with a minimum B-grade course weighted average mean
- At least two years clinical experience in the musculoskeletal field
- Full current Australian physiotherapy registration

NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Career outcomes

As a qualified physiotherapist and graduate of the Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy, you'll be eligible to apply to the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA) for the title of APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist. You'll also be eligible to apply for the specialisation training program through the APA, after which you can apply for senior positions. Our graduates now work as musculoskeletal physiotherapists in both metropolitan and rural clinics. They've secured positions in specialised private clinics, as well as senior advanced practice positions in the public sector.

Professional recognition

Graduates of the Master of Musculoskeletal Physiotherapy may apply for membership and the title of APA Musculoskeletal Physiotherapist with the Australian Physiotherapy Association (APA). Membership and titling may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant body for details.

Additional costs

In addition, you will also incur accommodation, travel costs and food expenses for the two-week University-based PTY5CRP subject. You may also incur costs for Clinical Placements, cost will vary according to venue. You must have a valid Police Certificate $17.00 - $42.00 and Working with Children Check (no charge) A First Aid II Certificate and/or CPR assessment may be required (AUD$160). Please note this course is not conducted by La Trobe University. A schedule of mandatory immunisations maybe required, the costs of which may vary depending on previous immunisation history, approximately AUD$250 -AUD$500.
