Our Professors of Practice are leading industry professionals who will provide practical insights into how best to apply your knowledge to work-based problems.

We offer a flexible timetable that allows you to balance your study with work and other commitments. All the Master of Marketing core subjects are available as evening classes. You will also have the chance to broaden your networks by studying alongside likeminded students from a range of professional backgrounds.

Specialisations, majors and minors

Business analytics

La Trobe Masters of Marketing students are given a unique opportunity to build on foundational studies in marketing management, customer relations, economics and finance. Advanced studies in business analytics allows you to understand marketing through the lens of business information systems management, the principles of business analytics, customer analytics, predictive and visual analytics.

As a graduate, you’ll have the opportunity to gain an in-depth understanding of IT alignment to business, governance and infrastructure. You will gain hands-on experience in IBM Cognos and Microsoft Power BI by using these software packages to design and develop analytics solutions for diverse business problems. You will have the opportunity to build predictive models and use data mining tools in real business scenarios. Those specialising in customer analytics will also learn how to create increased retention, frequency and value for customers. These specialisations will assist you to become a highly sought-after marketing specialist.

Public relations

Postgraduate specialisations assist our graduates to attain a high level of proficiency with which they can confidently launch into new careers or build on their current positions. A specialisation in public relations includes advanced studies in subjects such as Strategic Communication Writing, Strategic Communication Strategy, Strategic Communication Research, and Strategic Communication in Society.

You’ll gain command of all aspects of professional written communication in a strategic communication context. This includes news style, feature writing, annual reporting and other elements of writing. You’ll gain techniques and strategies to plan and respond to strategic issues with the guiding principle of harm reduction and the maintenance of public confidence, trust and safety. You’ll gain practical understanding of research design, qualitative and quantitative research methods and report writing. You’ll develop a working intelligence about changing issues in strategic communication that affect society, from globalisation to sustainability, international development, media ownership and medical and health issues.

Research

High-achieving students may choose to invest in a research specialisation. Studying business research methods and progressing to a business research thesis, graduates attain in-depth current perspectives and know-how in business principles and practices to give them an edge in the business world.

As a graduates with a research specialisation you’ll have a well-honed critical engagement with business research methods, with both quantitative and qualitative approaches to research. You’ll have the skills required to undertake research in business contexts, and write in a variety of contexts including report writing, thesis writing, and presenting. The business research thesis is undertaken as part of the Master by Coursework degree. Students complete a 15,000-word thesis under the supervision of a dedicated staff member.

Professor Gillian Sullivan Mort

Professor Gillian Sullivan Mort is a respected and well-published thought leader in the industry. Her research focuses on a broad range of topics in marketing, social marketing, international marketing, non-profit, social entrepreneurship, young consumers and branding. She has authored more than 100 publications including books, book chapters, journal articles and refereed conference papers. Her work on social entrepreneurship is cited widely.

Committed to industry best practice, Professor Sullivan Mort is engaged at a high level with industry journals. She edits the Journal of Nonprofit & Public Sector Marketing and also serves on the Editorial Board of the International Journal of Non-profit and Voluntary Sector Marketing and the Australasian Marketing Journal.

With a reputation for generating valuable work, Professor Sullivan Mort has received research funding from the Australian Research Council Discovery Grants scheme, telecommunications research grants, the Queensland State Government Treasury, the Victorian State Government Treasury, the University of Queensland and the Australian National University.

Entry requirements

Prerequisites

An Australian Bachelor's degree in any discipline or an approved equivalent qualification. Admission may be granted to applicants without an undergraduate degree but with five or more years of relevant work experience. In making an offer to an applicant, the university may give consideration to a range of factors including English proficiency, academic record and employment experience.

Career outcomes

You may choose to advance your existing career in marketing , or to launch into a new role in areas such advertising, public relations, brand management, business-to-business marketing, direct response marketing, distribution channel marketing, international marketing, marketing models and systems analysis, marketing research, new product planning, retailing management, sales and sales management, and services marketing. The degree is an internationally recognised professional qualification, which means that the skills and knowledge you gain at La Trobe can be applied in a range of global corporations.

Professional recognition

The Master of Marketing is accredited by the Australian Marketing Institute (AMI) until 2019. Membership may require an application to the professional body and may have additional or ongoing requirements beyond the completion of the degree.
