Behind every simple task - like charging your iPhone or using an elevator - is a complex set of processes and systems. Our Bachelor of Computer Science teaches you how to uncover and understand these hidden processes.
You'll explore the fundamentals of computer science, including key mathematical areas like discrete mathematics, calculus and linear algebra. You'll also establish expertise in programming languages such as C++ and Java, and develop an in-depth understanding of software analysis and design, databases, artificial intelligence, computer architecture, networks and multimedia systems.
This degree can lead to a number of specialised careers including developing IT solutions as a systems analyst, interpreting technical designs as a developer programmer, or writing code as a multimedia and games developer. You'll have the option to obtain an industry-standard CISCO certification, and if you achieve strong results in first year, you may also be eligible for a scholarship.
Depending on your existing qualifications and experience - whether from TAFE, another La Trobe campus or another university - you may be able to transfer credits towards this degree.
Units 3 and 4: a study score of at least 25 in English (EAL) or 20 in English other than EAL; and a study score of at least 20 in one of Mathematical Methods or Specialist Mathematics.
NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
Year 12 and non-year 12 extra requirements
Applicants may wish to provide other documentation in support of their application. Non-Year 12 applicants must complete and submit a VTAC Personal Statement online for other information to be considered during the selection process e.g. details on work experience or reasons for applying. Selection may also be based on GPA or STAT Multiple Choice.
A study score of 25 in any Information Technology, Maths: Specialist Mathematics or any Science equals 4 aggregate points per study. A study score of 20 in any LOTE equals 4 aggregate points per study. Overall maximum of 12 points.

The Bachelor of Computer Science is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS).
Graduates of the Bachelor of Computer Science may apply for membership with the ACS. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
