Master of Information and Communication Technology
The Master of Information and Communication Technology will give you the advanced skills and knowledge you need to take the next step in your ICT career.
In second year, you'll collaborate with a small team to plan and develop an industry-focused software or IT project. You'll also get to choose from a large selection of computer science, electronic engineering and networking elective subjects to deepen your knowledge in areas that interest you.
Throughout the course you’ll learn to develop smart solutions to real problems in a collaborative team setting, graduating with the full suite of relevant skills and knowledge required to get ahead in the global ICT job market. Among other things, you'll learn about project management, system design, testing and documentation.
You can complete your study in two years (standard duration) or fast-track it in 18 months (accelerated option).
According to joboutlook.gov.au, the steady job growth experienced in the area of ICT over the past five years is set to continue. Global demand for skilled ICT professionals means that, as a graduate, you'll be sought-after for a diverse range of roles across multiple sectors around the world.
The normal structure of the course is for students to enrol in six 15-credit point subjects per year (90 credit points) for two years.
The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Torab Torabi is a La Trobe veteran, having worked at the University since 1992.
His current role is the ICT project coordinator for the Master of Information and Communication Technology. This involves developing industry project subjects where industry representatives are invited to provide problems, which are solved by the students in this course in a competitive group environment.
“Every team and every student within the course, they need to do that industry project as part of their final subject, and they will able to learn this expertise, come up with problem solving and come up with a solution in a team environment,” Torab said.
“So when they go out there they know how to work within a team, using industry tools.”
Some of the industries involved include Air Service Australia and Pivot Maritime International which has a large simulation lab in La Trobe University.
“I have been working with more than 100 different companies. Some of these solutions are being used with the companies now,” Torab said. The project is 12 months long, and teams develop the latest technology and industry tools, they do requirement analysis, understand the problem, they do the design, they come up with the solution, the documentation and during the year they present to their customer and get feedback from the customer.
Academic entry requirement
The minimum entry requirement is successful completion of a relevant Australian Bachelor degree (or international equivalent) in computer science, information technology, computer engineering, or communication/telecommunication engineering with a substantial learning in computer science content. In addition, they are required to have a minimum Weighted Mark Average (WAM) 60% (or its equivalent based on the level of standard assessed by the National Office of Overseas Skills Recognition) in their previous qualification. Applicants must also have obtained a minimum score of 6.5 with no individual band score less than 6.0 in IELTS (Academic), or an equivalent English language test.
NB: Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

The Master of Information and Communication Technology is accredited by the Australian Computer Society (ACS). Graduates of the Master of Information and Communication Technology may apply for membership with the ACS.
