This specialised program provides you with training in the practice of art therapy, which combines art and counselling within a clinical, therapeutic or community context. Art therapy is used for the treatment and healing of developmental, emotional and psychological problems or disorders. It is also used as a wellbeing intervention for groups and communities experiencing distress.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 9.

Entry requirements

English language requirement

IELTS (Academic) score of 7.5 with no individual band score less than 7.0.

Academic entry requirement

An undergraduate degree in a relevant field such as fine arts, graphic design, art education, psychology, counselling, social work, occupational therapy or nursing. At least one year of human services work experience such as counselling and/or community work (paid or voluntary). A written application and submission of a portfolio demonstrating your skills with a range of visual art media. Please see the Master of Art Therapy checklist [PDF 447KB] for details. NB: Meeting minimum entry requirements does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Career outcomes

You will be able to work as a qualified art therapist in clinical settings including hospitals, community health programs, rehabilitation services, education and psychiatric settings, in aged care, palliative and forensic centres, with people experiencing substance abuse, eating disorders, rehabilitation, and numerous other health care needs.

Professional recognition

The Master of Art Therapy is approved by the Australian and New Zealand Arts Therapy Association (ANZATA). Graduates of the Master of Art Therapy may apply for professional membership with ANZATA. Membership may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.

Additional costs

You will need to pay approximately $100 for materials and $500 for immunisations. You’ll also need to obtain a National Police Certificate (A$16 to A$34.70). Please note: all costs are approximate and in Australian dollars.
