Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics
Bioinformatics is an exciting area of science, which combines molecular biology and information technology. It uses the power of computing to tackle biological and medical problems. It's also one the fastest growing industries worldwide.
Our highly-regarded course offers hands-on, technique-intensive learning, with a strong research focus aimed to equip you with the skills necessary to work in the sector. The curriculum covers key elements of biotechnology and the manipulation of molecular biological data.
The course offers you the opportunity to carry out a full year of laboratory-based research and participate in multiple weekly practicals. You'll spend between 25 and 30 hours in the lab each week during your second year.
Biotechnology is becoming increasingly central to a variety of industries, including medicine, diagnostics, agriculture, environmental protection, food technology and renewable resources technology. When you graduate you'll be prepared for work in molecular biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and biotechnology, in business and research throughout the world.
Our graduates are working as biotechnologists and technicians at DTS Food Laboratories and Clonal Solutions Australia. They're also working as R and D scientists at biopharmaceutical company CSL Biotherapies and CSIRO. Many of our graduates go on to do further research and work as academics.
You'll also have the flexibility to exit with a Graduate Diploma in Biotechnology and Bioinformatics after completing the first year. If you are an international student and decide to go on to complete a PhD you may be eligible for a scholarship that covers your course fee.

Jessica Alderton decided to follow her passion for genetics by enrolling in the Master of Biotechnology and Bioinformatics.
She first completed a double arts/science degree, followed by honours in genetics with the Victoria Police. She loved forensics, but missed university life at La Trobe.
As a Master’s student, Jessica has honed her research skills and learnt from industry experts. The course gives her the opportunity to specialise in genetics and gain specialist knowledge to widen her career opportunities.
Jessica says she enjoys studying in a supportive environment with leading academics and practitioners in the field. Jessica hopes to one day undertake a PhD in genetics and use her research to address real-life medical and biological problems. The Master’s course is a pathway to further study and specialisation.
La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS)
The La Trobe Institute for Molecular Science (LIMS) is a world hub for molecular science research, drawing together scientists from various disciplines to tackle contemporary issues and solve global problems. The LIMS facility is used by both students and scientists and has contributed to our 2015 ranking as ‘well above world class’ (the best possible rating bestowed by the ERA Australian Research Council) for our research in Microbiology, Biochemistry and Cell Biology.*
The LIMS complex has 56 research and support laboratories, advanced research equipment, a 200-seat auditorium, and over 3,000 square metres of teaching facilities. Around 400 academics, research fellows, postgraduate students and support staff are based at the Institute. LIMS also has a regional node at our Bendigo Campus.
This state-of-the-art facility provides Master of Biotechnology Management students with unrivalled access to researchers in the field so you can learn how business skills apply to a real-world laboratory.

Applicants must have an Australian Bachelor's degree (or international equivalent), containing at least two years (four semesters) of biology, and include the study of at least two semesters of biochemistry, microbiology, immunology, cell biology, genetics or biotechnology at second-year level or above.
NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.
Biotechnology is one of the fastest growing areas in science and there's a high demand for skilled graduates. This course prepares you for a career in medicine, diagnostics, agriculture, environmental protection, food technology or renewable resources. You could find yourself producing antibiotics, creating vaccines, profiling and cloning DNA, and producing advanced food strains. If you are a pathologist, medical technologist or paramedic, studying biotechnology and bioinformatics is a great pathway to a new career. Your experience in bioinformatics could see you working as a bioinformatician, scientific programmer or computational biologist. You'll have the opportunity to work in emerging biotechnology enterprises in Australia and overseas. $29,800 per 120 credit points.
