La Trobe's Bachelor of Early Learning allows professionals working in the childcare industry to upgrade to a Bachelor qualification.

This course is designed to fit with your working life - it's delivered online with no on-campus attendance required, so you can combine your full-time childcare role with flexible studies.

This four-year program includes 180 credit points of advanced standing for the Diploma in Children's Services, followed by a further 300 credit points for the Bachelor qualification. You can also nominate to complete up to 50 per cent of the supervised placement component in your place of employment, subject to the centre meeting the supervision requirements.

Course content is delivered through blended online learning. The online curriculum makes use of the latest technology to give you the complete experience. It includes include virtual classrooms and meeting spaces, video and webinars, online learning modules and mobile learning apps.

The qualification awarded on graduation is recognised in the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF) as Level 7.

Entry requirements


Diploma of Children's Services or equivalent qualification. You will also need to complete a Working With Children Check. NB: Meeting minimum prerequisites does not guarantee an offer of a place. Entry into all La Trobe courses is based on competitive selection and there may be limited places available.

Advanced standing - credit for prior study

Advanced Standing is the recognition of previous study or learning that can be counted towards a qualification. This can reduce the number of subjects required to complete your course. The amount of credit received depends on the level and relevance of your previous tertiary study and the number of subjects completed.

Career outcomes

When you graduate, you'll be qualified to teach children from birth to five years old in early childhood settings. You could work in early learning centres, kindergartens, preschools and early intervention programs.

Professional recognition

The Bachelor of Early Learning is approved by the Australian Children's Education & Care Quality Authority (ACECQA) until 2018. Graduates of the Bachelor of Early Learning may be eligible to apply for registration with the Victorian Institute of Teaching (VIT) as an early childhood teacher. Professional registration may be subject to additional or ongoing requirements beyond completion of the degree. Please contact the relevant professional body for details.
