Agricultural science

Help solve some of the most pressing issues of our time

The major global challenges of the 21st century are sustainable food production, disease threats and soil productivity. Study with us and be part of the solution.

Why study agricultural science?

Agricultural science is the study of plant and animal production. Our course will prepare you for a career that addresses the challenge of how to increase food production – sustainably and profitably – under a changing climate.

Combine practical career-orientated science with business and management skills to help primary producers in Australia and around the world to improve their food production with declining land, water and soil resources.

Where can agricultural science take me?

There's a critical shortage of agricultural science experts in Australia. So there's an ongoing demand for skilled graduates in the $30 billion food and fibre industry.

Exciting jobs can be found in large agribusiness firms, agribusiness consultancies, state and federal governments, commodity trading companies, humanitarian organisations and agencies such as the United Nations. Our graduates are ready to take up a diverse range of job opportunities, from working with local environmental protection agencies to improving farming practices in developing countries.

Graduates are also eligible for membership of the Australian Institute of Agricultural Science and Technology.

Why La Trobe?

  • In 2013 we opened AgriBio – the Centre for Agribioscience. AgriBio is a joint venture with the Victorian Government, Department of Economic Development, Jobs, Transport and Resources (DEDJTR) and La Trobe University. A world-class centre for agricultural research, it accommodates up to 400 researchers from DEDJTR and La Trobe.
  • As an agricultural science student you'll have the chance to conduct your research in this state-of-the-art facility and, in the company of committed researchers, be exposed to the latest developments as they happen.
  • As part of your studies you'll also complete a 12-week work placement.
