The Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship recognises Mr Khan’s humanitarian and social justice achievements inspiring communities across the world to make positive change. This research scholarship aims to deliver a life-changing opportunity for an aspiring female researcher from India to make a meaningful impact in the world.
The successful candidate will be supported with a four (4) year research scholarship valued in excess of $200,000 (AUD) to be undertaken at La Trobe’s prestigious campus in Melbourne, Bundoora. She will explore a research focus from a wide range of themes under the supervision of world-leading experts at a university ranked in the top 1.1% worldwide*.
Applications were accepted in 2019 as part of the celebrations for Shah Rukh Khan’s visit to La Trobe’s Melbourne Campus, where he received his first Australian university Honorary Degree, Doctor of Letters (honoris causa). This prestigious scholarship was presented in recognition of Mr Khan’s wide-ranging humanitarian work, including establishing the Meer Foundation to support and empower women who have survived acid attacks in India.

Our scholarship with the Indian icon continues our five-decade history of engagement with Indian culture – from academic programs to study tours, research partnerships and student exchanges.
Following the announcement by Shah Rukh Khan in August more than 800 aspiring female Masters graduates from India submitted an application for this prestigious scholarship. Following an extensive review by La Trobe’s academic and researchers a successful candidate has been identified and is expected to be announced by March 2020.
It is anticipated that the successful candidate will commence her research placement at La Trobe University in early 2020.
About the scholarship
The Shah Rukh Khan La Trobe University PhD Scholarship is available to aspiring female Indian Master graduates with a desire to undertake a PhD research project at La Trobe University. Applicants will have a high level of achievement, including a Master’s by research degree in a relevant discipline completed within the past 10 years which has been assessed equivalent to a La Trobe Master's by research degree standard of 70 or above.
The scholarship recipient will be supported with a range of benefits, including:
- a La Trobe Full Fee Research Scholarship for four years to undertake a PhD at La Trobe, Melbourne, Australia
- a La Trobe University Graduate Research Scholarship for three and a half years, with a value of 27,596 AUD per annum (2019 rate) to support her living costs
- visa length Overseas Student Health Cover for a single candidate
- opportunities to work with award-winning researchers and access to La Trobe’s suite of professional development programs.
