Indian Film Festival of Melbourne
In 2023, La Trobe celebrated 14 years of partnership with the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, showcasing more than 60 films in 20 languages from 11 to 20 August 2023.
The 2023 Indian Film Festival of Melbourne (IFFM) is the largest festival of its kind in the southern hemisphere, continuing to provide audiences with in-cinema and online film screenings.
The hybrid festival presents a diverse selection of the best movies from the Indian sub-continent, allowing audiences from across Australia to celebrate the best of contemporary Indian cinema.
The IFFM aims to break down cultural differences by showcasing films made throughout the Indian subcontinent, including Sri Lanka, Pakistan, Nepal and Bangladesh. This provides a valuable opportunity for Australians to experience the diversity of perspectives in the region. And for those from India, this gives them to chance to experience films from home.
For nearly 50 years, La Trobe has been a strong advocate for Indian studies and research demonstrated by teaching the only Hindi language course at a Victorian university. Alongside Indian cinema studies, our library contains the largest collection of Indian literature in Australia.
We are proud to be a founding partner of the film festival to further the cultural bridge between various communities of the region through films, music and dance. La Trobe's students actively participate as part of the film festival's workforce, delivering events and attending the premiers of major film screenings.
Equally, La Trobe has a rich history of bringing together students from across the Indian subcontinent to undertake life-changing studies or research at the University with over 11,000 of our graduates born in the sub-continent.
