Brief profile

Dr Tarek Rana is a Lecturer in Management Accounting in the Department of Accounting and Data Analytics, and La Trobe Business School Academic Coordinator for Albury-Wodonga Campus at the La Trobe University. Tarek earned his PhD in Management Accounting and Public Sector Management at the University of New South Wales (Australia). Prior to joining La Trobe Business School, Tarek held casual and sessional academic positions at the University of New South Wales in Canberra, the University of Canberra, and the University of Wollongong.

Prior to becoming an academic, Tarek was a senior manager and partner of professional accounting firms in Australia. He has considerable professional practice experience in the areas of business services, taxation, auditing, and financial planning as well as consulting services including financial management, performance measurement, and risk management. 

Tarek has received internal, external, and international research grants for projects in public and not-for-profit (NFP) sectors. Tarek’s research interests are in management accounting issues in public, NFP, start-up, innovation, and entrepreneurship contexts. His particular interests focus on the design, implementation, and evaluation of management control systems (MCSs), Business Intelligence (BI), and Data Analytics (DA); the effect of MCSs, BI, and DA on performance measurement, risk management, and behavioural management accounting. He researches using both qualitative and quantitative design approaches. His current research projects focuses on the micro and macro links between governance, performance, risk management, and accountability in the public and not-for-profit sectors. He is an ad-hoc reviewer for refereed journals.

Tarek has strong links with professional accounting bodies both in Australia and overseas. He is a Fellow of CPA Australia and member of Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (CAANZ), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA), Chartered Global Management Accountants (CGMA, AICPA). Currently, Tarek is serving as a member of the CPA Australia Albury-Wodonga Branch Council (February 2017 - Present), as a regional branch committee member of the Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand Albury-Wodonga Group (August 2016 - Present). Previously, he has served as an executive committee member of the CIMA Australia ACT Branch Committee (July 2012 – June 2016).

Tarek has mentored Honours, Masters and PhD students. In professional and business career, Tarek has supervised and mentored many professional accountants and analysts. He conducted a workshop by invitation from Mooreland City Council for small and medium sized businesses on ‘Managing Budget, Cash flow and Performance”. He has extensive experience in working with industry, government, and not-for-profit organisations which has connected him with several professional, government and private organisations.
