Val's LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care 2018 Forum
The one day forum aimed at service providers was an opportunity to learn and collaborate together to create inclusive outcomes for Lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans and intersex (LGBTI) people in ageing and aged care settings.
Following the momentum built at 2017's third national LGBTI Ageing and Aged Care Conference, this one day free forum was an opportunity for a range of service providers working with older people to reflect on their current inclusion and cultural safety strategies learn from LGBTI elders speaking, research presentations, current leaders in the sector and each other throughout the day's workshops. Taking place in Melbourn'e Town Hall the forum was followed the next day by a spectacular 2nd Coming Back Out Ball.
Highlights of the day included a film screening of the documentary film Untold Histories, providing an insight into the stories of LGBTI elders living in rural Victoria. The film can be streamed online on YouTube here. There were insightful research presentations from the Rainbow Ageing research project, ageing with HIV, end of life planning, and from the team at Out & About at Switchboard. The day concluded with a talk-show inspired panel of incredible LGBTI elders speaking on what LGBTI inclusive services look like and what older LGBTI people want as they age. We would like to thank everyone who presented and contributed to the discussions that made the forum a success.
Following the forum Val’s LGBTI Ageing & Aged Care has compiled a document outlining 6 achievable actions to help your service become LGBTI aware and inclusive. You can download the PDF here [286KB].
