About the Department

The Department of Archaeology and History combines two of our strongest areas of research and teaching. Both disciplines achieved ratings of 'above world standard' in the 2018 Excellence in Research for Australia rankings and we rank as the top university in Victoria for Archaeology research. We are also the only University to provide a vocational Bachelor of Archaeology program in Victoria. The Dept. has close links with Industry, Local Government, other World Leading Universities, and the Heritage sector with high employability for our students post-graduation.

We rank 3rd in Australia and in the top 100 internationally for Archaeology subjects, and 9th in Australia and in the top 100 internationally for the fourth year in a row for History subjects (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2018).

Our research has a specific focus on the Australian record as well as having a global reach, with research conducted in China, Jordan, Kenya, North Macedonia, Oman, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Sri Lanka, the UK and USA covering the last 4 million years. We run various field schools and study tours all over the globe.
