This is a quick guide to get you started using Search, a tool to help you find resources for your research project or assignment task. You can search for a specific title, author or by campus and collection by using the drop-down filters. Once you type in your search terms, click on the go button. Search has a predictive text function, which may be useful if you are looking for a specific item with a general title. In the results page, you are shown items that match your search terms. You can use further filtering options on the left hand side of your screen to find fewer but more relevant results. For example, you can choose resources by peer reviewed, by resource type, by date or by location. Your active filters can be viewed here (at the top of the left hand side filters). Your filters can also be cleared. Your results are displayed by relevance but by using ‘Sort by’ you can choose to arrange them by date most recently published, title or by author. Your results will then reload on the screen to match the restrictions that you applied to narrow your search. You can exclude items from your results by clicking on the “Exclude This” icon next to the filter that you wish to exclude. To view online content, click on the Full text available or Online access link. You may be asked for your La Trobe login details before you can access the online item. You may also have to click on a full text link in addition to logging in. To find physical or print items at a campus library, click on the Available at… link to view the locations, availability and the call number. You will need the call number to locate the item on the shelf. If the item is on the shelf and available at the campus that you are at or registered with, then you will need to visit the library to collect it. If the book is already on loan or at another campus library, use the Request button and log-in to request the item be sent to your closest campus library. To exit from this screen, use the x on the left hand side of your screen. For some items, you will see multiple versions, meaning both an online and physical or print copies or different editions are held in the library’s collection. To view the versions, click on “See all versions”. A useful feature of Search is being able to print, email or export your search results. You can also save your search to run again in the future. You can easily email or show the citation in your preferred referencing style. Other options are also available such as print or export results to EndNote and more. To save your results click on the Pin icon next to the result to add it to your favorites. Sign in to ensure you save the results or your search for future use. To view your Account information, go to My Account. Here you can view and renew loans, view requests and other information, including previous loans. If you have any questions about Search or the library you can ask a librarian via online chat, or check out our Frequently Asked Questions.
