Scholarships, awards and prizes

La Trobe provides a number of scholarships to assist students with their studies in times of financial need. There are also many awards and prizes that provide recognition of academic achievement.

Scholarships

Dean's Scholarship for Academic Excellence

Ten scholarships are available each year for eligible students commencing in undergraduate courses offered by the Faculty of Science, Technology and Engineering.

Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) Cadetship program

Zoology students are eligible to apply for Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) cadetships. One of the reasons for these generous scholarships is the need for many skilled graduates to manage Victoria's natural resources. 

This program offers:
  • An annual allowance of $9000 to help with fees and accommodation
  • Up to $500 each year for books
  • A DSE mentor
  • Two study tours per year (each of three days duration)
  • Six to eight weeks work experience with DSE per year.

Prizes

McGraw-Hill Prize ($500 voucher)

Awarded annually to the student or students with the highest aggregate mark in BIO1OF - Organisation and Function of Cells and Organisms who proceeds to enrol in second year level biological sciences subjects.

ADInstruments Prize ($250)

Awarded annually to the student with the highest aggregate mark in the animal physiology stream of zoology Honours. The prize is donated by ADInstruments.

First year Prize in Zoology ($100)

Awarded to the most outstanding student in BIO1AD - Animal Evolution and Diversity.

Ian Thornton Prize ($200)

Awarded to the student who achieves the highest final mark for a zoology thesis. The prize will only be awarded where the thesis is of sufficient merit. This award honours the memory of Emeritus Professor Ian Thornton, Foundation Professor of Zoology at La Trobe University from 1966 to 1991.

Peter Rawlinson Award ($250)

Awarded to the Honours or postgraduate diploma student showing outstanding potential for research in animal ecology. The award honours the memory of Peter Rawlinson, a staff member between 1967 and 1991.

The Richard Zann Memorial Bursary ($3000)

Awarded to an early career researcher enrolled in the Honours year in the area of zoology, who is from a rural area.   This prize honours the memory of Dr Richard Zann, Associate Professor in the Department of Zoology at La Trobe University from 1972 - 2009.

Second year Prize in Zoology ($100)

Awarded to the most outstanding student in second-year zoology.

Third year Prize in Zoology ($150)

Awarded to the most outstanding student in third-year zoology.

W. Danthanarayana Prize ($60 book voucher)

Awarded to the best final year student in the third year ecology stream of zoology. Emeritus Professor W. Danthanarayana (University of New England), formerly taught in the Department of Zoology, La Trobe University from 1970 - 1986.   He initiated this prize to promote the learning of ecology at Honours and Postgraduate levels.

The La Trobe University Warringal Conservation Society Wildlife and Conservation Biology Prize ($250)

“Promoting education in conservation by recognizing student excellence.” Awarded to a student with the best course weighted average mark score upon completion of the first year of the Bachelor of Science (Wildlife and Conservation Biology) or its predecessor (Bachelor of Conservation Biology and Ecology).
