I work in a research laboratory which studies skeletal muscle physiology. Skeletal muscle serves many important roles in any vertebrate’s life. For example, imagine not being able to move, breathe or eat, just to mention a few! Primarily, my research focuses on how mammalian skeletal muscle cells normally function and how their function might be impaired by disease or simply by aging. I find this aspect of my work interesting and enjoyable because it helps better understand how the body functions. A better understanding of how muscles work may help researchers find cures for diseased muscle or better assist the aging population in maintaining a more independent and active lifestyle.
